Gonna tell on myself for something incredibly stupid. Not a backlash but it's line related. Recently ordered a couple Clutch Eco Glides when they were back in stock. Threw them in the boat and first trip.out with them I ran out to a do nothing kinda point just to test how they ran to see if they needed any tuning. I'm in about 15' of water. I throw the first one for a whole. All is well. Runs perfectly. I cut it off, Mark it and put it away. Grab the second one and tie it on. First cast I just pitch it about 15' from the boat and I see it fly off the end of the line abd start to sink. I try to get to it on the trolling motor and catch it with rod but it's sank out of sight by then. I drop a couple of waypoints and troll over tge spot a few times to really mark it. I guess in my haste I tied a really poor knot as the line did not break. It simply cane loose. It was 100% controllable on my part. First and over time I've ever done that but of course it's on a $100 bait when I do.
I feel pretty good that I will get the bait back next trip out when I drag the spot for it but is still embarrassing as hell that I caused it. I used to cut the tag off my knot and throw the bait over the side. I quit that habit when I cut the wrong “tag” and threw a brand new lipless into the lake. I don’t have too many spool blowups since I ditched my Shimanos. The new Diawa reels just don’t act up very often.
Eat. Sleep. Fish.

I’ve caught some big fish after a good (but not great) backlash, .., some days it can almost be a pattern. You are correct on that, letting it set sometimes the key. Heard several stories from people who caught a good one after a backlash.

The ones with a frog and fresh braid are great. It buries and you can just throw it in the box cause it's done I really love loading up and throwing that frog wasaaaaaaay in those pads only to have it land 20’ from the boat, yep toast!

With Fluorocarbon it can be worse with a small backlash that folds over and creases the line. You don't find out its messed up until you hook up with a fish. This is also when those 2 pounders become 7 or 8 pounds.

I use nothing but spinning reels and I get them too. Usually happens 3/4 into the fishing trip after I haven't caught anything worth it.
So, trip before last. Oh yea, spinning reels. Those good ole wind knots. I love em.

I am absolutely convinced that braid is not bound by the law of physics....it can backlash the middle of the spool while leaving an unbacklashed layer on top...it can tie itselt in a double overhand knot around the rod tip when all you did was flip a piece of cover...it can tie the same knot around the reel handle AFTER wrapping itself under the rod grip from the other side... it really is an amazing product..

After fishing for 50 plus years you'd think you would never backlash so bad that you had to cut the line out.
While out kayaking last week a cast caught the other rod which was behind me and backlashed pretty bad. I dug it out and continued fishing. About an hour later I did it again, so bad this time that I just reeled it up and brought it home and cut the line out.
When was the last time for you? Two weeks ago. Normally I can get it out fairly easily but this time for whatever reason....I could not get it out. I hadn't used this particular rod and reel set up in quite some time and I did not check to see if the reel was set correctly before I made my first cast with it, and there you have it.....total backlash.

I love the ones where you got yourself a brand new Lews Super Duty spooled up with 20 lb Tatsu, 17 lb leader for the C-Rigged Brushhog. You are feeling good! You are set up in 8-10 foot and about to make a 50 yard cast into 25 foot of water and drag it uphill........Then it happens! You forgot to set your drag, your spool tensioner and the wind brake. I think yall know the rest.

Everything on your bass boat is broken......You just don't know it yet.

When was the last time for you? I think it has more to do with how often you fish, it happens. prolly 2-3 times a year for me, but I'm fishing in the neighborhood of a 100 days per year. Just had to re string a reel due to a backlash.
