Yes, if you outsource delivery and labor for a large scale solar project; you are looking at a 15 years break even point.

There are several smaller scale methods that make sense (2-3 year break even point +/- back up generation if the grid goes down, etc)

Been hearing about some push back coming from home insurance companies (excluding coverage for electrical generating equipment - solar panels included).

The only person I know that did this admits that the reduced electric bill is added to the payment on the panels it is basically a push. He derives satisfaction from having the panels as he is a true believer in human caused climate change, His loan was 25 years which is about the life expectancy of the panels.

I agree. Way to many cons vs. pros. Only way I would ever have them is if I wanted completely off grid or just wanted a form of backup if grid went down. It is not a way to save $$$ or an investment. It could actually depreciate your home and make it harder to sell.

Now....... If you had the room to have them installed on your land and not on your home and money was not an object and you didn`t care about your ROI...........Put them up. Never know when the S may HTF.

So this statement right here tells me this is a lease program with the panel provider. If they can guarantee they will provide his power requirements, and they can provide a battery sufficient to cover nights and multiple days without enough sun to generate then maybe it is an okay deal for him.

To me, I cannot figure out how a company can be profitable leasing a panel array for $128/month. The economics just are not there. They will have to make a profit somewhere - government subsidies, hidden fees, installation costs... there will be some sort of revenue for the company in the fine print. Until you find out how they are making money, you have to assume it is going to cost your dad way more than $128/month.

Who pays for them when a hail storm destroys them? Insurance won’t cover them.

Someday, hopefully a very long time from now, those panels will be on your roof. Do you really want to deal with them?

Solar panels are a terrible short term deal!! Most solar from 5+ years ago went out of business for good reason. I deal with them as an insurance adjuster often. It’s a good way to mess up a roof and also a good way to cut down on people willing to buy a house as they are plain ugly. For a long term investment if you’re willing to sink money into converters and storage to run off your own generated electricity you can recoup costs in 12-15 years. Short term stuff is a scam.
