Whatever you do, don't put them on your roof.

If he is a retired electrician...and has friends with young backs...all the hardware is available at Signature Solar in Sulphur Springs. They are also a great resource for any questions.
Hoymiles microinverters headquartered in Plano, TX have excellent microinverters
Ground array of about 1000 watts (lightly used panels (Craigslist/Facebook market place) are very cheap and easy to check with a voltmeter....Signature Solar only sells brand new panels) Hoymiles 1200 watt microinverter DC disconnect switch in front of the microinverter AC disconnect switch after the microinverter Dedicated circuit and dedicated circuit breaker
This is the only simple method that makes sense since the recent net metering changes....if you do it all yourself to cover the daytime idle consumption of your home; it pays for itself within three years (in sunny latitudes)

My father has had a gentleman come to his house yesterday pushing solar panels. Dad (82 years old) is wanting to buy into this. Does anyone have any info on whether this is a good deal or not. Supposedly a 5 year contract. Promising him a total bill monthly of $128.00. Any more energy that is brought in is sold back to the power company. House is 1600 square foot. Average elec bill cost is $250 per month average. Any opinions from the TFF brains?
Thanks. I heard it takes like 15 year before you ever get a return on your investment Take his checkbook away from him, and it may be time for you take over his finances.

Yes, if you outsource delivery and labor for a large scale solar project; you are looking at a 15 years break even point.
There are several smaller scale methods that make sense (2-3 year break even point +/- back up generation if the grid goes down, etc)
I detailed the simplest one with cost savings and not back up as the goal.

Might want to check with his insurance co. Been hearing about some push back coming from home insurance companies (excluding coverage for electrical generating equipment - solar panels included).

The only person I know that did this admits that the reduced electric bill is added to the payment on the panels it is basically a push. He derives satisfaction from having the panels as he is a true believer in human caused climate change, His loan was 25 years which is about the life expectancy of the panels.

No way! I agree. Way to many cons vs. pros. Only way I would ever have them is if I wanted completely off grid or just wanted a form of backup if grid went down. It is not a way to save $$$ or an investment. It could actually depreciate your home and make it harder to sell. Now....... If you had the room to have them installed on your land and not on your home and money was not an object and you didn`t care about your ROI...........Put them up. Never know when the S may HTF.

... Company supposedly told him that in 5 years he will have three options, pay for the solar panels, have them remove them or renew the contract for an additional 5 years. ... So this statement right here tells me this is a lease program with the panel provider. If they can guarantee they will provide his power requirements, and they can provide a battery sufficient to cover nights and multiple days without enough sun to generate then maybe it is an okay deal for him. To me, I cannot figure out how a company can be profitable leasing a panel array for $128/month. The economics just are not there. They will have to make a profit somewhere - government subsidies, hidden fees, installation costs... there will be some sort of revenue for the company in the fine print. Until you find out how they are making money, you have to assume it is going to cost your dad way more than $128/month.

Who pays for them when a hail storm destroys them? Insurance won’t cover them.

Whatever you do, don't put them on your roof. Someday, hopefully a very long time from now, those panels will be on your roof. Do you really want to deal with them?

Solar panels are a terrible short term deal!! Most solar from 5+ years ago went out of business for good reason. I deal with them as an insurance adjuster often. It’s a good way to mess up a roof and also a good way to cut down on people willing to buy a house as they are plain ugly. For a long term investment if you’re willing to sink money into converters and storage to run off your own generated electricity you can recoup costs in 12-15 years. Short term stuff is a scam.
