Trying to decide on new f 250 not sure I need a 7.3. Anyone have one of these?
Kinda leaning toward the 6.8

Disregard my previous post got confused with the
Diesel. However our 6.8 in our Motorhome that weighed13,750 pounds did the job in Colorado mountains pulled just fine.

Rode in Ford F250 with a 7.3 pulling a 31 foot rv fifth wheel pulled it with ease just lugged and chugged really nice. Sorry I’m not much help.

The 6.8 isn’t going to get any better fuel economy and not only is it rated less for towing it also has a different transmission. Unless you’re looking for a base work truck and want to save a few bucks get the 7.3

Sounds like you’re talking about the old Triton V10 6.8l. New 6.8l is a V8 and just came out this year.

Pretty much my take. The xl and 6.8l will save some money but no doubt the 7.3l is a little stouter. My 6.8l gets comparable economy to my bil's 7.3l. With that said, it pulls my 30' trailer just fine.

I haven’t been paying attention to the Ford FB pages, since I was forced to buy a Chevrolet. Is the transmission in the 6.8 having the same issues as the 10sp that’s in the 7.3?

Have to say that I’m not overly in love with the Chevrolet, but it’s doing its job so far.

Occasional hard shift but no major issues that I've read.

I'm on a bunch of super duty facebook pages. I don't hear much negative about the 7.3L transmission. The 10-speed is generally praised in the 7.3L and 6.2L and 6.7L diesel, although I think the diesel trans is technically a different unit. They're all well-liked. My 6.7 and 10-speed is fantastic. 120k miles on my 2020. Taking it to Arizona and Colorado next week.

The 7.3 and 6.7 share the same transmission, no difference. The new 6.8 uses a different transmission.

I just looked it up. The old 6.2 got a different trans, but 7.3 and 6.7 were the same. Same setup with 6.8 it appears.

I have a buddy with the 7.3 and he even gets decent mpg on the highway. That's probably the direction I'd go if I was going with a gasser, but I'd consider the 6.8 if price difference was significant between 6.8 and 7.3. The power and torque differences between 6.8 and 7.3 are nearly insignificant.

I think the gas engines use the 10R100 and the diesel uses the 10R140 transmission.


Correction: 10R140G for the 7.3L and 10R140D for the 6.7L

Well I bought a xlt 3.73 ratio axle 6.8 gas yes it does pretty good on gas less than a thousand miles and got 16 mpg on 400 mile trip to west tx. It ain’t even broke in I love it . Didn’t really need the extra hp of 7.3
I just tow a bass boat and don’t even know it’s back there. Plus got a 6500 discount at dealer.

Congrats! XL or XLT? Didn't think the XLT came with the 6.8l but I've been wrong before. Anyway, I hope you enjoy! Mine has been solid after the first year.

Yes you can get 6.8 in xlt trim bought mine a Waxahachie for they have a bunch withe 7.3 and 6.8.
No start stop nor cylinder deactivation. My neighbor has a 22 7.3 3.55 ratio rear he said his mpg is about 12 1/2 to 13. I’m loving mine.

I just bought a new 7.3. The 6.8 will do fine. The deciding factor to me was the smaller transmission in the 6.8.

The 10R140 is supposedly rated for 1,033 ft-lbs torque and the 10R100 is supposedly rated for 737 ft-lbs but seems to me either is adequate.

I have a 22 7.3 4:30 and get about 15mpg on the highway. Towing our travel trailer....10.

I have a 2022 7.3 but don’t really drive that much, tow mid size bass boat some - love it so far.
Trip to CO two weeks ago (3,000 miles) was 15.0 mph total trip.
Usually around 11.5 mpg around town.
