I only saw my grandpa upset once and it was when the French Govt presented him a medal and awards at a ceremony in Abilene. They had big ceremony etc on the court house steps. He got home and threw everything down and said my only reward is I lived. To this day grandma won’t let us kids see his “ war chest”. She just says that’s a lot of bad memories.

I had an uncle (one of my Dad's brothers) who had similar reactions. He NEVER talked about his time with the Army in the Pacific Theatre. I knew he enlisted during WWII along with my dad and one other brother, but I did not know where he was or what he did until my aunt and a cousin were planning his funeral service several years ago. Even they had very few details. Ha always told them it was a "Hell on earth" and he never wanted to think about it again.

I found out some bits and pieces about his time and tried to piece together with some research about where he was. My best guess is that he was with either the 7th or 96th Division, who invaded Okinawa along with the Marines. He was a sergeant in the infantry at that time.

The Battle of Okinawa was the bloodiest battle of the Pacific War. The 82-day battle lasted from 1 April until 22 June 1945. The Americans suffered some 48,000 casualties, not including some 33,000 non-battle casualties (psychiatric, injuries, illnesses), of whom over 12,000 were killed or missing. Killed in action were 4,907 Navy, 4,675 Army, and 2,938 Marine Corps personnel. There were 24 MOH awarded to the men that were there.

Family is everything!

Life is precious. We don’t have forever. We have now. This moment. We can choose to love our lives now.

My dad and 2 uncles were all WWII vets. never talked about their experience. But I think they talked to each other about it. Dad died when I was 16 (1975) and his younger brother told me about some the stuff my dad had gone through later. It really explained a lot about why he was like he was. He died in 2012. flag soldier RIP Greatest Generation. You deserve it.

I had several uncles who served in WWII and most would not talk about the experience. The exception was my Uncle Paui who served with Patton in the 6th Armored Division. He was part of the first team that liberated Buchenwald and caught some of the SS still in the camp as others were fleeing in civilian clothes. As kids, he sat us down and told us about the gas chambers, the ovens and the torture because he wanted us to know just how evil men could become when they turned their back on God. He also told us how even Christian men could take only so much and he told us what they did with every SS soldier they found and those that they scoured the countryside to root out of their hiding places. He said these men were no different than the Amalekites and other Biblical haters of the Jews and they needed to be exterminated on the spot.

I always sat rooted in place as he shared these things. He came back after the war and become a lay preacher and ministered to many. His faith enabled him to rise above what he had seen and experienced and he was my favorite uncle.

Conversely, I had a very close friend who flew 21 missions over Germany in a B-17 as a tail gunner and he never said one word about his service or experience. He talked about his youth in Chicago and his brushes with the organized mobs and political bosses but never spoke a word about the war. I only knew what little his wife shared.

They were all about 3 feet taller than the rest of us, God bless them!
