1 more question about lithium. Lets say 1 of my lithium fails can I substitute a lead acid in its place on a 36v systems? Only reason I ask is because not many store fronts handle lithium and if I am on a trip somewhere and the lithium fails I don't want to be stuck not being able to use my boat.

If one of your 12v lithium's goes down, you can substitute it with a lead acid battery. Its not the ideal situation but it will get you by.

Right now I have 3 group 27 deep cycle Interstate batteries for my 36v trolling motor.

My Minnkota MK330D battery charger is not rated to charge lithium so I would have to change that also. What brand charger is everybody using on their lithiums?

It seems like everyone likes the Ionic Batteries but what’s everyone’s opinions?

Also do I need to change out the battery trays from my current group 27 size or just put the lithiums in the same trays and strap them down tight?

I really don’t want to spend a ton of money to upgrade everything but I am tired of buying new leaf acids every 3-4 years. And the ionic have an 11 years warranty

Curious if you ever pulled the trigger on the batteries?

I’m in the exact same boat as to the batteries.

Would love to hear your results.

Thanks.

I use a Noco on board charger...works great.

check out goodman_fishing on here, he does you tube lithium battery comparisons....

Another advantage to lithium, ZERO acid and corrosion to ever deal with. Financial advantage? I’d saw it’s a wash, not like lead acids are getting any cheaper, they’ll keep going up in price.

Not much more than the everstarts.

Edit: I’m going back to my original answer, no go on the 50’s. I’ve been reading about a few guys being over the amp draw with their TM’s and the BMS shutting down.

A lot of it depends on your trolling motor. If you have a newer brushed model, it might have a low enough amp draw to NOT kick off the lithium BMS. But a few have said that their older fortrex have kicked off a 50’s BMS, while running on high speed. It’s all in what you own.

I have 3 50a Ionic's and neither my old Ultrex or my Quest has ever tripped a BMS in the 3 years I've had them.

There were a couple of guys having issues on BBC, but I think they were using a cheaper brand of lithium.

Thats because sometimes cheap can be expensive.

Battery capacity is measured by the AH rating. Each cell in the battery is rated, say 50ah or 100ah.
The ability of the battery to operate at high amps is due to the BMS which is a circuit board. The higher AH rating, the more expensive the board.

The two are mutually exclusive in that you could have a 50 ah battery with a large BMS and it would work where a 100 ah battery with a smaller BMS would shut off. That is where you need to look at BMS ratings of the battery and the guys who test them.
