I live town with 75,000 population and it seems that I continously pass trucks pulling trailers with zero turn mowers and edgers....I live in subdivios with probaly 70 1700-2000 sq ft house and small yards...I would guess that at least 80% like me use a lawn mowing service...I justify it by my age and my yard just isn't big to justify the cost of a riding mower plus I have probaly mowed enough grass with a push mower to fill up yankee stadium,,,incidently I pay my yard man $50.00 to mow and edge and do it about twice a month...also have yard sprayed twice a year for weeds/varmints/fungus....... ...
....

I pay to mow mine. It's worth $40 to me to have someone else do it.

I mow my own place. Mowed about 3.5 hours today. I couldn't pay anyone to do what I want done.
But, I don't understand justifying the cost of anything I want. I sure as hell can't justify the cost of my Champion. Or a 2023 truck. Or most everything I have I probably could rationalize not having it.
My goal is to not be the richest man in the cemetery but the poorest.
Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.

I do mine and it's no joke. Push mower .52 of an acre of "grass". It's a pain but as stated it's good exercise and saves me $150+ a month...
Would guesstimate about 80% of the homes on my street have a service. And their lots are not half the size of mine. That big [censored] corner lot looks real nice until you have to mow it! LOL
I remember as a lad going door to door trying to mow lawns and this old biker guy telling me, "Son I change my own oil, mow my own lawn and beat my own wife. Some things a man has to do himself."
I remember thinking whoa this guy rules. That always stuck with me...that biker guy telling me that when I was like 12.

Just upgraded my equipment to make it more efficient (and easier) to do mine. This time of year I mow every 3-4 days.

Have always done my own and will do as long as I am able. I am 68 have a young buck neighbor across the street that hurt his foot doing martial arts was in a walking boot and his yard was looking terrible. I did his yesterday not just mow but trimmed shrubs, flower beds, edged, weedeated, and mowed it looks great now took 3 hours. Over the years at one time or another I have mowed probably at least 8 houses on our street that were looking rough. Not regularly just more of a one off basis. I like the exercise and being quite modest I ain’t lazy ![yes yes](/forums/images/graemlins/default/yes1.gif)

Corner lot and I just started using a service this year… been here 20 years. Corner lots suck! Edging is like triple because of the damn sidewalk and fence.

I had a neighbor several years back that was 93 years old and still mowed her own lawn with a push mower. I offered to cut her grass but she insisted on doing it herself. She also drove a 3 on the column manual Comet and spent her time volunteering at the senior center in town.

I am gone too often to do my own, it would look like a cow pasture most of the time. My yard is close to two acres, back yard is the same, my son keeps it mowed.

I pay to have some mexicans mow mine. It's worth $40 to me to have someone else do it. Last guy charged me $40 for the front yard and didn't edge or sweep. I do my own.

Corner lot and I just started using a service this year… been here 20 years. Corner lots suck! Edging is like triple because of the damn sidewalk and fence. That's right... and don't forget about the sidewalk easement grass, have to edge both sides of all that. With the push mower, edging and sweeping up it takes 2 hours. But for the prices I've been quoted to do it... it's worth it.

I've had mine mowed for 10+ years. The arthritis in my back was beginning to get bad and even with a self-propelled mower it really bothered me for several days. Never regretted the decision. The guys have even down several other things for me over the years, all landscape related.

I gave up the yard work when my oldest bought his first house last year. I gave him all of my tools and started with a yard service. Best 30 bucks a week I spend.

I and 2 others rotate on mowing our church property. I'd guess about 5-6 acres. Takes about 5 hours to mow and weed-eat.

Mow my own. 1.1 acres. I just get on the rider and do it. I was the oldest out of 6 and had mowing duties at parents houses. Also mowed one across the street.
There are 2 things I give a wide berth to on the highway. White vans and trucks towing a trailer with lawn equipment. Headed to the deer lease once I was behind a trailer with lawn equipment. Went around him and saw the sign on the side. It said Andy's Lawn Care. I thought OK never heard of a Mexican named Andy.

Did mine this morning. I take pride in my yard so love maintaining it. My son and I had three yards once but that came to an end when he went to college.
I may do it again when I retire but not with a walk behind.

I mow mine as well. I also clear under the trees with a brush cutting head on my line trimmer, then trim the grass areas. Pick up limbs and branches every wind storm, drag em to the burn pile, etc. I did not take into account that I would be a ranch hand when buying a place in the country. There is always, something to be done outside. Like someone else said, I'll do it til I can't.

Growing up in the county. A nature yard is beautiful. Wild flowers, grasshoppers, bees.
But in town, it has to be cut. Not because of anything else but mice and bug control. Fire prevention when it goes dormant, turning brown.
In the country, we had field mice. Tiny little mice. In town, those basturds are twice the size and take nest in the attic.
You can't leave the grass long.

I pay to have my yard mowed, my guy is still only charging me $25 per week during mowing season, been using him for about 7 years now.
I also pay a service to fertilize my yard 8 times a year.
I gave away my mower, weed eater and edger, I kept my blower.

I've been floating along the native grass. Which really only grows outside the middle of the summer. When it's the hottest. Then it'll spring back to life at the slightest of rain.
I've also been babying a Mustang grape vine. It's a monster. The birds usually eat the grapes before they plumb up, deep purple. They'll strip the vine. Which is fine. It's only reason to be in the yard. Is making wine. But I already told you about the birds.
There's also a big honeysuckle blob. Out front. The paper wasp love it. So with those guys around. No web worms. That's a meal for them.
I enjoy my yard too. I have sculptures I've welded together throughout. Tasteful.

This is the only thing I pay to have done for me.
I only have a third of an acre but it’s cut up with fence lines, islands, gardens, buildings and some such.
If I weed eat all my edges I end up at the chiropractor so it’s an even trade off.

I have always mowed my own, lived in town before with a corner lot, enjoyed push mowing it. Moved to the country, I mow about 2 acres. My driveway is almost 300 ft long so I edge more than 600 feet every other week. I have gotten good at edging. I still enjoy it, couldn’t afford to pay someone to mow that much.

one thing that increases the number of yard mowing services in my town is our ethnic population is 74% of the population and almost all of them live in govt. subsidized apartments or rental houses and most of the rental homes have yard mowing service figured into the rent...

I love mowing my own grass. Back years ago, my little farm was so big that during the springtime, once I finished up getting everything cut it was time to do it again. Cutting grass is my mental therapy. Beat laying on a sofa telling a stranger your problems.

I’m 68. Many years ago, I threw my back out and the doctor put me on bed rest. I hired someone to mow the yard, once.
That was the only time, ever. And I didn’t think they did a good enough job.
I see a lot of married women mowing and I see a lot of men mowing that have.strapping, healthy sons

I like the exercise and being quite modest I ain’t lazy ![yes yes](/forums/images/graemlins/default/yes1.gif) I had a neighbors yard that was looking a bit shabby- I was worried they might be offended so I waited til they weren’t home and made it look nice…😆

There isn't much I hate more than yardwork. How about painting? Don't mind painting. The difference is that I'm not allergic to paint. My dad would make me mow the lawn, then my mom would take me to get allergy shots twice a week. Spending at least 1 week per month during the summer sick in bed with sinus infections wasn't fun. I think my dad thought I would develop an immunity, or maybe grow out of it, but of course it doesn't work that way.

Mowed, weed whacked, aerated, and put down 100 pounds of fertilizer in each yard today. Therapy of sorts. Yeah, I do my own yard work, always have always will until I can’t. And hung a new actuator on the automatic gate today as well.

I mow mine most of the time. A yard service comes in about one every 5-6 weeks to mow it. The break from doing it is nice, especially in the summer.

I mow my own. Only takes about 1hr 20 minutes to mow, edge, weedeat, and blow. My parents are in their later 80’s so I mow their 5.5 acres with the Zero turn.
Probably 75% of the yards in my subdivision have lawn service. A lot of those lawns don’t look very good. Nobody has their kids mow. You never see a kid even take out the trash.

I cut mine at at home but hire it done at the lake. $500 at the lake. The lake is a full acre and some yrs she mows every week some yrs it's every six weeks. Depends on rainfall.

I have 3 acres. The house sits on an acre that takes quite a bit of work to maintain. Lots of weedeating etc. The other 2 acres just need a simple owing and weekending. I enjoy doing it. Good exercise and clears the mind a bit. Even during the summer I enjoy it.

I mowed our corner lot in a NW Houston neighborhood for 35 years. I was the only person around there that did my own yard. And it looked good. The same guy did most everyone else’s yard, and we’d talk mowers. I started with Snapper and went to Honda. Over the years he used Lawnboy, Toro, John Deere, and wound up with Honda. He kept records on mower engine hours and said Kawasaki and Honda (cast iron sleeve engines) lasted the longest.
And then we moved to the country and my wife wanted to mow (while riding) the 2 acres around the house. I mow all the surrounding pasture with my tractor. She can really fly on that big Ferris, and she loves to mow (while riding). She’s good with that zero turn.

Welcome to the country, sir.....IMO, the rewards far outweigh the risks! You've done well.

I do all of mine and will as long as I can. I enjoy the work and how it looks when I am done. Live in the country and have 24 acres. Mow a couple of acres around the house and then 6-8’ width all around the fence line plus all of the pond dam and area around the pond. Kids are grown and gone now so most of the time it is just me. Put the grandkids to work helping when they are here and want to earn some money. I have told them I will not just give them money but if they want to work to earn it, I will pay them for doing so. They help with fence work, tree trimming and whatever else I ask them to do.

We have 2.5 acres, I mow my own. Bought a Kubota Z150 ZT, Stihl gas powered trimmer, chainsaw, etc. for the yard service. It takes me 4-6 hours each week to keep it up to my standards. It's my weekly therapy / extended exercise.
We were paying someone at first to do it and the were charging $300 per visit.

It gets out of hand with this much rain, I spent 4 hours just weedeating yesterday. I declared all out war on beggars lice. I'm about ready to go Madmax on them ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2024/05/full-75674-224183-441446805_1534534617124796_6333168536137439523_n.jpg)

This is what gets me, kids these days don't do squat, ok most kids Spags, lol

Was at the lease for the last 3 days, using the walk behind trimmer to weed eat inside and out 3 feeder pens and 2 blind areas including the camp area. grass/weeds were 2-3 ft tall and damn thick after all the rain this spring. As soon as I got home, I cut and edged my yard before the rain came in. This was with a blown-out knee.

I don't know if we even have a yard mowing service in this town. Most residence park cars on their yard.

Mom mows the yard for exercise. She will be 73 in July and wants to stay active, but thinks walking is boring, but apparently walking and pushing a mower isn't. I don't know. She had her hip replaced on Friday, so I'll be mowing it for the time being. I work 6 days a week, so I won't push mow as it takes 1.5 hours to mow the acre lot. I'll ride the mower I bought for her lazy idiot brother that mooches off her and now me. Ugh. Most people in our subdivision mow their own, but there are a few houses that use lawn services.

Welcome to the country, sir.....IMO, the rewards far outweigh the risks! You've done well. ![cheers cheers](/forums/images/graemlins/default/cheers.gif) Bob, I know you're not a fan of masks, but if you have poison ivy/oak and burn it, please wear a respirator/N95 mask, something...you can actually inhale that and it can do bad things. My aunt learned that the hard way.

Despite my current situation, owning a "gifted" Cub Cadet with a Kohler engine, I do it myself.
I'm appreciative of my buddy who gave me an old CC, but it's been a pain to use.
With luck, each week it starts! I love doing the yard!

I have an older zero turn that is the roughest riding mower I’ve ever been on. I would have sold it a long time ago but my wife wanted to try it out one day, as soon as I saw those big honking hooters flopping around I knew I would never get rid of it. She can’t mow for [censored] but I don’t care.

Mowed all of mine (from 1/4 acre to 2.5 acres) for 30 years. Now pay Felipe $40/week to mow my 1/2 acre.

Do my own. Lake level dictates how much there is to mow. Currently at max mow area (+/- .75 ac) and am about sick of it. LOL I did finally order some gaiters so my boots won't fill up with trimmings while I weed eat...so there's that!
Can't swing a dead cat around here without hitting a Chebbie pulling an expanded metal trailer full of mowers and weed eaters.
Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading

Do it myself. Kind of enjoy it and good exercise. Will keep doing it till I can’t. Yep and ain't paying anyone to clean my house. To me that seems lazy until you get to the point where you're physically unable to do those things. My pops is 80 years old and still mows his yard, my mom is 80 and she still does all the housework.

I have 1.5 acres at home and 1 acre at my "lake" house. My wife or I mow both of ours. When I bought the house with 1.5 acres, I priced out a lawn service to mow it. $130 per time mowed so I bought my own Z-turn mower. I broke even (even with lawn mower maintenance) after about 4 years. I've owned the house for 6 years.

I mow mine because it is small and I enjoy it. It's small, so takes less than an hour and I can take some pride in it. Started teaching my 12 yo son last year, and have pretty much turned it over to him this year. He is actually getting paid to mow our neighbor's yard too this year. I'm pretty proud of that. Seems a shame for all the neighborhood kids to be sitting around the house while the mowing is outsourced to the illegals.

White people in general don't make their kids work but rather spoil them. This isn't a blanket statement for all white parents but I would bet the majority are that way. The kids coming up now have no gumption to work because their parents have spoiled them beyond reason. My kid wasn't like that as sure as other members kids in here weren't that way. But IMO the majority could give 2 chits about working.

My son usually mows because I am 65. My wife thinks that means I will drop dead if I mow. Son mowing keeps her happy. We feed him when he comes over so he is happy.

If my mower dies or if I physically can't do it anymore I will then hire a lawn service. Until then I will do my own.

I do my .75 ac with a push mower. Takes about 1 hr with weed eating. Usually after a 12-14 hr day at work. Im only 52 and not lazy. Not paying someone to do what I can do myself.

* I forgot to add, I feel a great sense of satisfaction when I see a shaggy yard look manicured, and I did it!
I bet most of you do as well! IN65
Addendum: Whether you cut your own lawn or hire a service, a beautiful, trim yard is nice to see for 3 days!

Addendum:" Whether you cut your own lawn or hire a service, a beautiful, trim yard is nice to see for 3 days!"...three days is about right. I am mowing mine about every six days to keep it looking nice. With my walk behind mow, edging trimming etc... takes about 1 1/2-1 3/4 hours. I let a couple of local high schoolers do it about once every six weeks and they knock it out in less than an hour.

The weedeating is what always killed me. Next time you trim grass down under the trees, hit it with some roundup afterwards and then you don't have to worry about weedeating again for a few months.
