My grandfather was not big on fishing if the cows were laying down or the wind was from the east. He always said, “East is least” indicating that the fishing would be bad if the wind was from the east. What is your opinion?

Grew up fishing saltwater on the east coast. Always heard the saying "When wind blows east fishings the least, when wind blows west fishings the best."

It's all about changes in barometric pressure. No matter how you can observe it.

Cows bedding down or a wind change.

The whole saying that I heard many moons ago was...winds from the east, fishing's least...winds from the west, fishing's best...winds from the north, fish come forth...winds from the south, hook em in the mouth. And I am sure the resting cows & dead skunks play a major role in the scheme of things. The other thing I pay attention to is when the Cormorants & Pelicans take flight to go feeding. My actual opinion is that winds from the north is the worst...all else a-ok...

I have not found this to be true, at least with crappie on my home lake. Wind direction seems to be a minor influence.

We don’t get a lot of straight east wind in north central Texas, but tomorrow it is forecast to be coming in from the east. I will let you know how I do. scared

I do not concern myself with east and west winds. It seems that everywhere I go it is always north or south winds with a dab of east and west thrown in.

East wind blowing into a western shoreline can = a big day on the water.

As mentioned barometric pressure changes as well as other factors play a role.

My wife and I had a good CAST for Kids day in an east wind. Ended up with 5 channel catfish, 2 freshwater drum, 2 common carp, 1 black buffalo, and 2 turtles. There were lots of smiles during the morning. It was a good day in an east wind. I will post a report when I get the pictures loaded.

We have a negative saying for every wind direction…..lol. For saltwater more concerned with the tide and moon phase bite.

I like some wind. Seems fish bit better than with no wind at all. Direction I prefer it to be blowing into the shore line I am fishing.

I had a fishing buddy years ago that over thought fishing. He would comment on the cows, the wind, barometric pressure, and water color. He even bought one of those new fangled Color C Lecter gadgets. I would just go fishing. I mentioned to him that the fish don't read the fishing books he reads. Confidence in your baits and the lake go a long way for me.

The day a front hits from the north, and the day after the fish get lock jaw. Locked in the closed position. The 3rd day the barometric pressure starts going back to normal and they slowly begin feeding again. West and East wind have never effected me down here in Texas. I have relative in Washington state. Their saying was Wind from the East, fishing the least;. Wind from the West fishing the best.

I come from the water.

So winds from the east fish bite the least I have heard plenty of times. However I’m a firm believer it all depends on how the body of water you are fishing is oriented. Barometric pressure is one that I know plays a big part in it too because of their swim bladders. Now as for the cows laying down, it’s funny but I’ve caught limits when the whole herd is laying down, cows need to lay down to digest and chew their cud just like deer have to lay down to digest their food as a matter of fact all species of Ruminants have to stay in a certain position to digest their food either standing in one spot or sitting in one spot either way God made them that way so they have no choice lol. So as for me when it comes down to it I’ll rely on the barometer to see if it’ll be worth while vs winds and cows wives tales
