For those of you that fish west Texas and east Texas, what would you say was the biggest difference between fishing the 2 areas. I’ve fished west of 281 my whole life. I have been to Fork a dozen times and Richland Chambers/Cedar Creek a couple, but that’s about it. Thinking about T. Bend, Rayburn, Palestine ext….May be making a move and just curious. Thanks 😎

Humidity. My folks had a place at Cypress Springs and once I moved back to west Texas the first thing that got me when we went there was the humidity when it starts to warm up. If you live there you acclimate but going back and forth can take some time.

Trees….lots of trees that can and will block the wind and give you places to get out of it in some lakes. Just don’t misjudge how windy the day may get or you could be in for a surprise when you get to the main lake.

Water clarity won’t be Amistad or PK clear. 3-4 feet max from what I remember and that was when lakes like Fork had lots of grass. 2-3 was great.

Diversity of aquatic vegetation is better out east.

Get lane chips for navigation for the lakes they are available on.

The circus has just about ruined Ivie for me. All you ever read about is it’s on “fire”!

What about fishing styles? I’m used to rocks and dead salt cedars. Looks like more grass, stumps and brush piles out east. Thanks for the replies!

I know what you mean. I miss fishing grass and Lilly pads. Docks are big on some lakes out east. Like the ones on Fork. Wooden docks with posts and crossmembers and sometimes brush nearby can be money! Brush and wood, pads, grass and other slop. Wood retaining walls on some lakes act as a backboard for the Shad to spawn on. Rocks will mostly be rip rap instead of the main substrate of the lake and it will hold fish. Most everything I remember fishing out east has Sandy, silty and harder clay making up the bottom mostly. Don’t get me wrong, I love fishing PK I just wish it had some pads or grew some weeds that would make a sloppy area to throw an old scum frog in.

You can flip cypress knees from now till eternity on rayburn and toledo. They are ready cool lakes and I wish I was closer. Grass, brush piles, ledges. They have it all over there and some good little lakes too. I worked in Nacogdoches for a few years and and lake Nacogdoches is a fun one to fish. And those lakes fish big.

Agreed, they just kind of have it all out there when it comes to bass fishing.

If all you want is bass fishing, deep east Texas can’t be beat. Now, if you appreciate other facets of life, maybe it isn’t the place for you, not sure, maybe it could compare to the area you live in that department? Plenty of good lakes for fun fishing, and plenty of big lakes that have tournaments regularly.

I think one of the other things about Central and East Texas is in the span of 100 miles you have literally a ton of lakes. And even though the larger lakes like Sam Rayburn, Toledo Bend, Fork etc you have some great smaller lakes to choose from within an area with some great fishing. If you are in the Fork area you are really close to Bob Sandlin, Cypress Springs, Lake Winnsboro, Lake Quitman, Lake Hollbrook, Lake Tawakoni, Lake Welch, Lake O' Pines, Lake Palestine, Murvaul, Lake Tyler, Pat Mayse. It goes on and on and you never get bored with all of the opportunities to check out new water.
