I went to the lake after work earlier this week. This is a dirty water lake that the fish are spawning in currently. If you know where they spawn it is not hard to know where to pitch to for the spawners. The lake is not known for big bass at all. I respooled my lighter Texas rig rod over the weekend with new 15 lb Big Game. I used that rod Tuesday to fish for the bedding fish. I have used this setup for years on this lake without any problems. However, Tuesday I broke the line four times on the hooksets. Two of the fish I re-tied immediately and then pitched back in and caught the fish. One was a 2 3/4 and the other was a 3 1/2. Big Game has never failed me this way in the past. Has anyone had problems recently with Big Game. I am wondering if they have changed how they make it or if anyone has experienced bad batches of Big Game lately?

Check your rod guides. Had a similar issue and my tip was missing the inside portion.

It is not the rod guides. I built the rod with recoil guides and have checked them.

Did you buy new line to respool with ? Some places, like Walmart, have line sitting on the shelf for a long time before it ever sells and I doubt that they ever rotate the stock .

Mono doesn’t go bad on the shelf. Direct exposure to sunlight will degrade it, but not sitting around in a store.
Could be a bad batch though.

Line was bought at an Academy store and has either been inside my house or in a boat compartment since purchased.

I would not be surprised if we see more and more of this as the major producing country for everything from computer chips to fishing gear was hit hard 2019-2022.
With the delays in production and loss of experienced workers, I wouldn't be surprised if corners have been cut and new trainees aren't as good while ramping up production as much as possible to meet demand and fill back orders.

I use Big Game 10 lb test exclusively & have never had an issue, but who's to say you didn't get a bad batch...here is a 6 lb.er from yesterday ...

Isn't it like $10 for 1500 yards of it? I'd chunk the old spool and buy a new one. Respool every fishing trip and you're still ahead on flouro.

Agree with the comment earlier. How long have you had the line in your garage or boat? The store could of had it for a while also. I use fluorocarbon 90% of the time and respool often but used to use BBG all the time with no issues. You may have just got a bad roll (these companies are supposed to have QC but that's another topic) or it is just outdated and cycled the seasons a few times and got old. I would throw it away and get a new spool and try it.
