From TPWD
Although there are no numerical speed limits on the water, citations may be issued for excessive speed or reckless operation. Use common sense, and operate at a safe speed at all times — especially in crowded areas.
Excessive speed is a rate of speed greater than is reasonable or prudent without regard for conditions and hazards or greater than will permit a person to bring the boat to a stop within the assured clear distance ahead.

I fish some lakes with clearly posted speed limits. So which is correct?

The state of Texas does not set a numerical speed. The lake authority can.

How would that contribute to his accident? I would think track or heading up at night would be much more disorienting.

Prayers to those involved. Fog scares the [censored] out of me, especially on lakes that have buoy routes or public trail chips to run. As my Mom used to say when I was learning to drive. I’m not worried about you, it’s the other idiots out there. GPS is great but just like everything else, it is subject to human error.

100 percent spot on. You have to know when to stay off the throttle. Then you have to worry about staying out of the way for those that don't.

"We got to get to that spot first." Unfortunately, we are dealing with this on non tournament days. I still come across decent anglers that respect the sport of fishing, but have some crazy people out there.

Do they ran up there in broad daylight?

Looks like she is doing some cover for bad decision. It's terrible, but (12 News Story):

Quote
Thick fog and low lighting contributed to the accident in which the boat struck Rattlesnake Island at about 5:40 a.m. Friday morning, according to Lindon Wood, Lead Ranger for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the lake.

Are you inferring that the news report should somehow be believed over the person involved?
2 weeks ago the media report couldn't even get the lake correct for the HS tragedy...

I would trust the authorities over the lake, yes. She wasn't directly involved, according to the information in her post it was her husband. Even if her hearsay is true and there was no fog; the fact that the accident happened at 5:40AM may tell everything we need to know. It was an hour before sunrise; not even Nautical Twillight, he was relying on GPS and traveling too fast for the conditions as evidenced by the final location of the boat. Yes, he made a mistake, hopefully his friend fully recovers! But even mistakes like this can be used as an educational tool - Slow down and be careful in low light, fog, or other conditions where visibility is impacted.

That should buff right out with one those fancy ball shaped buffing pads on the end of a drill driver right?

Not something to make light of. Very serious accident that will change lives forever.

I receive pushback every time I say this, but I’ve had it happen a couple times and corroborated by others, thick fog affects GPS signal. Adverse weather, such as heavy rain, fog, or snow, can scatter or absorb GPS signals, reducing accuracy as water droplets in the atmosphere bend the signals. DO NOT TRUST YOUR POSITiONING OR HEADING IN THICK FOG.

Please slow down!

Blaming electronics is always the scape goat. The human factor is usually the real issue 99% of the time. Mechanical failures do happen. But, most, IF NOT ALL, accidents are the result of a bad decision by the driver. Period.
