it's a drive but Balmorhea SP would be cool. The cabins were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps

Garner is one of my favs. Garner does book quick and subject to weather changes even though it's pretty far south-central.

Check out Queen Wilhemina Lodge up in OK. They refurbished the whole place 5 or 6 years ago and it's a pretty relaxing stay.

Ooops...my bad, that's actually over the border in Arkansas. Close to OK, though! banana

Palmetto is a hidden gem. Down off I10 close to Seguin. Look it up. It is a hidden climate area full of palmettos on the Guadalupe.

Do you have to entertain the wife and kids or is camping the entertainment?

If you want to do the coast the cabins at Drifter's Resort in Rockport are really nice. Several of our friends do them, and my girlfriend loves them. You can also rent an RV and do Goose Island State Park in Rockport; they have a fishing pier, great wade and kayak fishing, and a bunch of guides close by. And the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is right there. I don't recall the name of the outfit, but friends of ours have rented the RV to join us in our RV there, and the outfit that rents it sets it up at the park and retrieves it for you; you just tell them when you'll be there.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Palo Duro is great....but the roads can still be treacherous in March if we get an ice storm around Amarillo.

I did not know that, thanks RATZ. My grandfather worked the CCC back in the day.
The only story I remember of that is one my father told to his brothers, my uncles, one year. Grandad would be gone for three weeks at a time, come home for a couple days and then get on a truck with a bunch of friends and head back out.
He came home with two bags of groceries, one in each arm and $20. They thought it was a large amount of money.
