I know we are talking about using these batteries for the trolling motor, but I was wondering if the charging system on an outboard would charge these types of batteries or ruin them since it is not a lithium type charging system. Was going to get one for the outboard as well and was just wondering. If you get one designed as a cranking battery with a quality BMS such as the Ionic 125 you’ll be fine. Outboard charging systems put out more than enough volts to charge them.

My motor is 2005 with 700 hours, so it’s seen some days of use and sitting. I have an ionic 125 and a Napa 7234 that I’ll switch around with my motor, experimenting so to say. Odd enough, my motor actually runs better (idles better) with the ionic. It wants to stall out a lot when on the 7234 battery. My pea brain is thinking that the fuel pump might like the extra voltage that it’s receiving. I did have my alternator go out though, I don’t know if it would have gone out anyway or if the higher voltage from the lithium contributed. Haven’t had a chance to really run the boat since replacing the alternator. I like having the lithium and will probably purchase another when my 7234 napa dies. Have duals back there for graphs and cranking.

The low internal resistance / high C-rates of a LiFePO4 battery can certainly accelerate the wear on an alternator. Not saying that's the root cause, but it wouldn't be the first one.

The Deep Cycle or Iron Phosphate Lithium battery will work on most engine alternators. There is some very cheap but good batterys called Chins buy direct or from Amazon you can get a 12v 100ah deep cycle for $335 I have a friend who has 3 of them for his Ghost and they been working flawlessly for 2 yrs now. The one I like is the Ionics even there refurbs on Ebay Store .

Wow. Those 12v 100ah batteries have really dropped in price. Three years ago, I paid $650. And I would do it all over again. I put in 8 hours use with mine. I have never ran them down to zero. I don't even keep an anchor in my boat any more.
Birds of a feather, flock together.

Switching TM batteries to Lithium this spring. Which charger is best? MinnKota or Noco? I am on the fence between 5a or 10a. For the most part I only fish mornings and charge overnight.

I have 3 ionic 50ah/force tm, 125ah start/electronics, minnkota 440 pc (pre pcl) that charges with the agm mode. over 2 yrs now and no problem whatsoever. I recommend the ionics, lots of dealers now, bluetooth is super simple and great for status of charge, just be sure if you do a start battery that it is rated for it. check with tommy at rockwall marine, I know for a fact that sartin marine at fork carries them. footnote: due to circumstances beyond my control I have not been out in the boat but once since the upgrade, the no maintenance alone has been worth it.

We had some issues with all of our 4 bank chargers this summer and should be fixed now (like to be up front and honest). Happy to help get ya fixed up when youre ready 🍻 http://fishtacklemarine.com

Any reason other then that to get a 10A?

Any reason other then that to get a 10A? LiFePO4 tend to prefer higher charge rates, especially as you go up in size. The rule of thumb for ideal charge rate is 0.2C. So if you have a 100Ah battery, 100Ah x 0.2 = 20a charge rate. 10a will work fine, 5a is a bit on the low side. Will it work? Yes. Is it the recommended charge rate? It's not ideal. If the price point is a hang-up, I've been using this "off brand" 10a charger with no problems. Charges my lithium and lead-acid or AGM battery. 3-bank, less than $200.
