Hello everyone, I’m hoping to get advice for a Christmas gift. My son gets to do a lot of saltwater fishing and the only saltwater fishing I’ve ever been able to do is surf fish at Matagorda. So I need some knowledge please? He goes out with his father-in-law 30 miles and from what a can tell catch mostly red snapper. I’ve seen pictures of him holding some good size fish. They leave out of Sargent where they also do a lot of bay fishing and I know he goes to a dock sometimes. I know he uses Gamakatsu octopus single and offset circle hooks. I’d like to get him some of the different sizes he may use but all I know is what circle hooks I need for catfishing since that’s all I do. Can anyone give me an idea what sizes are appropriate for red snapper and other fish closer to shore like flounder and so forth (king of an all around hook for shore he’s not picky what he catches) for all I know when there catching red drum it’s all lures?

For saltwater, I use hooks from size 6 to 16/0 circle hooks. For red snapper, I use circle hooks from 8/0 to 11/0 depending on the size fish I am catching. You can also get him some 5/0 circle hooks for the smaller vermillion snapper. For inshore, I like 3/0 to 5/0 Kahle hooks for redfish and trout. I use 2/0 j-hooks for shrimp and always have small hooks (6 to 1/0) to catch bait.
Searching for hook lots on EBay is a good way to get a variety of hooks for a good price.

Also .... in-line circle hooks would be better than offset circle hooks for fish releasing ... IMO

Than y’all for the replies. I really appreciate the information. I’ll check out eBay for a hook assortment that fits the bill. I’m just getting started concentrating on catfish. I set the boat or for dragging several rods wil drifting , trolling etc. I going after big fish. I’ll using 6/o up to 9/o depending on the situation. I have been torn between offset and inline. I ask the question on a catfish forum and started a debate. People saying offset increases gut hooking others saying they never had it happen. To one gentleman said he switched to inline and saw his hook sat go up by 30%. I’ll be releasing the big ones and I feel like inline may be the way to go.

In federal waters you need non-offset circle hooks for reef fish. The law states,” All persons aboard a vessel harvesting reef fish in the Gulf of Mexico must possess and use non-stainless steel non-offset circle hooks when using natural baits.”.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I appreciate the knowledge about what is legal. I’ve put together an assortment of hooks I think he’ll appreciate but before I pull the trigger my daughter-in-law text me today saying she’s going to go through his fishing gear while he’s gone this weekend and see if he needs something else. I said to myself that may not be a good thing. If he’s like me there’s going to be a reel or something that only he knows about. I always said it’s going to be a shame when I pass away and my wife sells my fishing gear for what I told her I paid for it.
