is there a financial benefit other than maybe a smaller electric bill?

with our hail storms I would think they would add to a homeowners policy cost, roof mounted means possible leakage etc.

will you have battery storage for any power outages, will the panels be enough to run your house for a couple of days?

imo, they have their place like a large commercial install, residential in this climate I would think ends up a wash most of the time on savings.

3 places I know of out here have them ground mounted, not practical for urban but looks more practical to me for any servicing/replacement and the roof won't leak because of them. jmo

something I came up with if you want to try it.

buy a voltmeter, 12v. camera solar panel, and a good place to mount it.

give it a week, check it morning, noon, evening for output. this will be comparable to your gain as far as charge ability, you will see a big fluctuation from full on sun to cloudy times, like the 3-4 days of clouds we just had.

wind generators are more practical here I think, we have wind day and night and while there are calm days a storage system will fix that.

Solar panels and the install are cheap (and getting cheaper) if you do it yourself—with today’s energy’s rates, you achieve your return on initial investment in two years.

The old 12-15 years to make your money back estimate was mostly due to labor install and shipping costs and was when energy rates were reasonable.

In Texas we are blessed with Signature Solar’s huge warehouse and store front in Sulphur Springs; thus if you have a truck, no shipping costs, and if you know how to find rafters, install flashing, and use a drill and impact driver zero labor cost.

Yep, and DO NOT trust the numbers the solar guys show you. They use simple payback models and bad assumptions. I got some quotes and ran my own numbers and payback was just not there. I had one guy tell me that I would still get the tax credit even though I do have a tax liability. One used $.18/kwh for electricity price.

Couple years ago, I had roof issues. Roof guy noticed my next door neighbor had solar panels. He said, if you want to guarantee a roof leak, get solar panels installed. They were approached by a solar company wanting to partner with them to install solar. After doing their research, they turned them down because of the long term roof issues.

If you think about it, you are drilling dozens of holes in your roof. When you have a roof leak, you’ve got to hire a solar company take down the panels before you can get the roof leak fixed.

Also, at my age, the investment takes too long to pay out.

Question....
Every solar install I see them using a nail gun to mount the panels.
We live on the coast, after Harvey the nailed together stuff was in the next county. So, are these things wind rated at all? Sure doesn't look that way.

a good installer can install them to where they are a benefit to your roof
that wind damage is probably user error on the install
i have been involved in 3 installs 3 years ago & there are no issues

I wished to hell they’d figure out how to sell them some other way than going door to door! Pizzes me off, these idiots. I’ve never bought anything from a door to door salesman and never will.

Isn't there like a 72 hr void of contract law with door to door sales .
