We fished the one on the Ouchita river. If they go back to the basin next year then that's the one we are going to fish

It seems like a foreign country at times, especially if you have to deal with the folks that live back in those swamps.

I lived and worked in LaPlace (about 20 miles north of New Orleans) for about a year back in the 80s. Had a crew of about 25 working for me and all of them had those names that ended in "eaux". The ones who lived back in the swamps spoke that Southern Louisiana Cajun that was really hard to understand.

It takes a bit to get used to a thick Cajun accent. One of the worst Cajun accents I even heard was a horse trainer that worked for my best friend's (in HS) father whose name was Blackie Nunez. This was in Port Neches, Texas where I grew up as a kid.

The story of adding the "X" to the names is kinda cool. Most when they arrived in South La. couldn't read or write so the "X" denoted their signature or was considered their mark. All these last names you see in S. La. are all over New Brunswick, Can . and Nova Scotia but without the "X". As you know, the Cajun French were a people driven out of mostly Nova Scotia but out of Atlantic Canada for not being accepting of the Anglican Church and for being French sympathizers during the Seven Year war between France and Great Britain. The region of Acadiana La. is a mongrelized population of Spanish, blacks, French, Indians (Creole), and there was even a German colonization.

My wife was a Babineau from New Brunswick.

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.

One of the local anglers fishing the tournament called them the "hot sauce sounding last names"....

I spent the summer of my senior year in high school working in Venice with my Dad on one of the refineries there. Met several kids my age including a couple of girls. One of the kid’s family had my Dad and I come for Sunday dinner several times. Great people and I always wanted to go back but have never made it.
