Well my lower unit is toast and in need of replacement or now may be the time for a new 4 stroke 150 repower. Motor runs good so I'm kinda on the fence about what to do. I hate to spend thousands of dollars on a reman or new lower on such an old motor but it's definitely the cheapest option. I'm 56 years old and plan on keeping the boat for the rest of my life and know I'll have to repower at some point in the future but thinking If I could find a good used lower I could run this motor for a few more years. She's just been such a good motor I hate to give up on her and call me old fashioned but I grew up running these two strokes and theres nothing like the smell of two stroke oil early in the morning when you fire her up to head out fishing...lol. Anybody have any ideas where I could find a good used lower or know a good place in the DFW area that does Mercury repowers? It'll be going on a 2005 Triton TR-186...

Could probably get a reman lower unit or have it rebuilt for $2-3k. New motor is upwards of $10k (maybe $15k now with inflation). You do the math and make the decision yourself.

My mechanic had one sitting around in the shop. He's putting new seals and water pump and will install it while I wait for $1,000 with a 1 year warranty. I'm going that route for now and will repower in a year or two because I plan on keeping the boat hull until I die with the new boat prices the way they are now....

I had my XR6 (2004) power head rebuilt last year for $5k and it runs like a top now. It would have been cheaper but I needed a new crankshaft which was $500. I looked into a new 150 Pro xs and it was going to be $17k with taxes and rigging. That was at a local dealership giving me a deal for being a first responder, the other guy wanted $1k more! I have the same boat as you and I only paid $11k for it 10 years ago, I just couldn't see spending nearly twice that for just a motor. If my lower unit goes out, which I am sure it will at some point, I figure I will just suck it up and pay to get it rebuilt. Oh, it is a 4.75" gear case and the gear ratio is 1.87:1
