Our remodel has wrapped up and we are putting the finishing touches on our attached garage space. We opened it entirely up so we had access to cable runs and we had to brace up some old fatigued ceiling joists, along with some other changes.

Anyways, there is one side I know we will re-insulate real well that adjoins the house. I'm trying to decide if it is worth it to just insulate the other two walls and ceiling. it is not a conditioned space, but thought the added insulation would only help temper what makes its way into the house and temper the garage extremes as well.

I had my insulation guy who sprayed the main house look at me funny when I told him about my idea but I tend to always overdo things.

Most all of our custom houses get insulation in the garage and a insulated garage door.

Mine is and it stays nice and warm in the winter.

How much time do you spend in the garage? Does the garage door face north or south?

If you spend a lot of time in the garage working on projects, I'd consider DIY installing a small minisplit with precharged lines. It's luxurious, but all you need with these small precharged line minisplits is a run of 12/2 MC cable and a 15 amp or 20 amp circuit breaker at the main panel. Everything else is included in the kit......you will need a circular hole saw, a chisel (if going through brick), and a small container of brick/masonry patch if going through brick.

Or if you get direct westerly sun you'll want to insulate. Plus it acts as a temp barrier for the common wall(s) shared with the living space.

You know, we had some extreme temps here in Texas the last few years.

Many garage doors are insulated these days, if not, that's an easy DIY.

Going further than that is dependent on how much time you spend in the garage.

Not hard to go up into the space above the garage and throw down some chopped cellulose and then lay some batts on top.

We use our garage as an extra cooling space in the winter. I place my two liter bottles and water bottles out there to keep them cool. So, yeah, insulate it, man!

Insulating the garage door makes a huge difference. If you DIY, make sure you adjust the settings on your door opener to account for the weight.

If the ceiling from the garage goes into the attic, then it should be insulated IMO.

Absolutely , Atticcat R60 is what I went with after installing a 2 ton standard split unit for just my man cave boat space. With gas heat will be cozy in winter as well.

Don't skimp

Mine is insulated along with insulated garage doors. It really minimizes the temperature swings inside.

It helps a lot to insulate- but if others have said it yet- your garage door needs it as well. My garage doesn’t get below 50 in the winter in northern Oklahoma.

Normally I’d pass on a DIY system like that- but for that price I’d give it go, not much to lose.
