This past Wednesday, yesterday, and today, I have observed others and enjoyed myself catching good numbers of white bass and some hybrids on both Cedar Creek Lake and Lake Tawakoni. Normally, like now, when the lakes are full of micro-shad I have to downsize to a #1 or #2 Mepps to catch fish. On Wednesday I fished with CHAMPION FISH and Fastguy, and both were using full-size yellow BoBlades (see pic below) and catching more fish than I was with a #1 Mepps. I borrowed a BoBlade from Gene and tried it but only caught 2 in about 12 casts while they were catching one on most casts. I later asked George how he was working the BoBlade, and he said he was reeling up from the bottom fast and they usually hit it on the 5th crank of the reel. Gene added that they used high-gear ratio reels with full spools. So, back on Cedar Creek the last two days, I rigged up a rod and reel with 8.3 to 1 gear ratio and full spool and tried to emulate what Gene and George were doing. I located a good school of fish on the bottom and started casting the same yellow BoBlade. Sure enough, I started catching fish - big sandies and a few hybrids. I would crank the reel anywhere from 4 turns to 10 turns before stopping. Sometimes they did not strike until the 8th turn of the reel handle.

Can I explain why this works when I also can catch them on a #1 Mepps? No. It's a phenomenon. Thinking they might bite any similar-sized spoon, slab, or spinner if I worked it like they worked the BoBlade, I tried several varieties and got no bites. I am not promoting BoBlades, just stating a fact that may help fellow fishermen.

I might add that on both Tawakoni and Cedar Creek, when this technique worked we were on fish in 12 to 18 fow.

These lures work year round! My Customers can learn the techniques quickly and begin catching fish most days! Awesome report on the lakes as well!

Love this post! Mepp Master is extraordinary in sharing, helping others, and telling like the way it is. Love ya, DC! I fished with Dennis numerous times and many in my circle think DC is all about mepps. But for me DC will leave his comfort zone and will try anything that can improve his game and others as well. Or in other word DC is dam open minded and always asking to learn more! This man has amazing clarity and wisdom.

Back in January DC told me he never fished with Fastguy before and asked if I can arrange a trip with Fastguy, Gene, Dc and me. At Texoma or Tawakoni. So I finally made it happened once in June but the three are retired buddies and prefer to fish weekdays so I couldn't join the Dream Team yet. But I am pretty sure us four migos will hook up one day. Lol

This video explains the verticle presentation of a Maindelle Mepps inline spinner, not a BoBlade. The BoBlade success I am observing at present is not verticle. It is best with long casts dragging the bait back to the boat close to the bottom. Not shown in the video is Bob's newer heavy #2 seized Mepps to address the micro-shad issue.

Maybe this one is closer to what your experiencing. Bait really doesn't, it's the technique I'm interested in.

T Bird, I appreciate your intent to help explain. I was using the sawtooth method with Mepps in 1976, probably before Bob was born. It is very effective with Mepps, but when the shad are tiny, I have to downsize to a #2 Mepps. What is different in this post/string is not the sawtooth method but the fact that the BoBlade is catching them when a #4 Mepps will not and other similar-sized spoons, slabs, and spinners worked the sawtooth way will not. That's why this is a phenomenon in my opinion.

I can say for certain that Dennis is a master of the saw tooth technique. I learned it from him. The only time I don't like using that technique is when the lure is very light like a Mepps #1 or #2. I just don't have a good feel for the lure. I like the mini MAL. I can feel it working. I'm looking forward to spending some more time with the BoBlade. I've already made a rod and reel change for my next outing. Hopefully it will be this week.
