In the latest episode of a gazillionaire deciding he wants to make part of a currently barely navigable Texas waterway that feeds into the Highland Lakes chain providing water to residents of Lake Travis, Austin and the Colorado river beyond, a former Texas oil executive has plans to create a private lake on the South Llano river.
This river is a main contributor to the Highland Lakes chain providing water to communities south of Kingsland all the way to Matagorda Bay. To divert millions of gallons of water for private usage at the expense of many, many thousands of downstream citizens while in the midst of a serious drought is concerning to all of us here in CenTex.
Here's the story so far, as reported by KXAN-TV in Austin. I live in Spicewood on Lake Travis, what little there is of it at the moment. Travis is currently 46.37 feet below full pool. There is exactly one public boat ramp open on Travis right now, and it is a primitive ramp with a half-mile long rough dirt and gravel road leading to it. What central Texas does not need right now is wealthy landowners diverting scarce public water for their private enjoyment while depriving less fortunate citizens of water needed for the necessities of life.
