Joe Wright Reservoir isn’t really close to anything. We stayed down the canyon at Archer’s Poudre River Resort in a cabin. It wasn’t fancy, but nice. It is a pretty drive up the canyon to the lake. There is also a good restaurant about a mile down canyon from the resort. There is trout fishing in the creek behind the resort with spots to fish between the resort and the lake. “Not close to anything” is a common theme with the best places to fish out west. The harder something is to get to, the better the fishing is. More driving, more hiking, better fishing.

That is because there is no oxygen up there and old guys like me take a long time to crawl up to a place to fish.

I’m booked for a trip to Steamboat Springs in August. My wife’s cousin lives near there, and he has told me of grayling in the alpine lakes and streams near there. I’m not one to give away secrets, so the best info I can give you is that Steamboat Springs area has grayling.
