Tournament or not, my butt would be on the bank bunkered under a tree Imagin what that guys truck looked like when he got back to the ramp Don't understand why he didn't go straight to the bank and flip that kayak on top of himself... He was in a PA... no real space under the kayak when flipped and it's well over 150 pounds loaded. Saying this, you are correct, even if he tipped it on its side and got mostly under it he could have been mostly protected. Perhaps his head was where mine was at when I got stuck in a squall on Ray Roberts... while not forecasted, I knew it was getting bad fast and thought that I could get around the point and into the neighboring cove (ramp cove) less than .5 miles away. All was good until I hit the point and the winds went from +/- 25 to 50+.... I lost control of the kayak and by the grace of God got pointed back in the right direction long enough to get into the next cove... this scared the tar out of me and I hope I never forget it. This might be his "squall story" that causes him to be more cautious in the future!

I went straight to the bank off that big point coming back from Old Folks on Palestine, years ago.. wind and white caps were dropping me on top of stumps where I was getting hung up, next wave would lift me up and drop me down on top of the next one like a pin ball... finally made it thru, lightning popping, headed under the pine trees only to hear big limbs crashing down all around me. Emptied kayak, took hatch cover off... rolled kayak on top of me and stuck head in hatch.. . very peaceful once my head felt safe. thought for sure I'd get smashed by limbs but nowhere else to go. Rained hard for half an hour and I was laying in a puddle.. its kind of funny now.

No unless the fish are biting and you are going with several other cold water experienced kayakers who have a vested interest in your safe return. Watch some cold water hypothermia videos on YouTube. The fact that you have never flipped your kayak is a big strike against you. Myself would wear a good Scuba dry suit or wetsuit in addition to the above considerations.

Experienced this once on the Brazos with softball sized hail and 80 mph winds. We were in a canoe. Saw the green clouds coming in so we immediately went to the banks with the biggest trees. Dumped all our gear out and covered with a tarp and rocks. Flipped the canoe over the top of us and within minutes it hit. We were perfectly fine. All the vehicles at Rochelles were totaled.

these guys are lucky to be alive... came so close to screwing up in several different ways. It’s people like this that put our first responders in harms way for being stupid. I’m not a betting man but I would be willing to bet that guy took that Ascend out again with 2 motors on it and water pouring over the bow. But this time with his own hand pump.
You get out of it what you put into it!
