Heading down to Cocodrie, LA in a few weeks to fish for reds and trout which I've never done before. We have a guide to help us but trying to avoid looking like a total noob, anything from a rod/reel or terminal setup I should avoid or be prepared for? I'm planning on bringing a spinning rig and a casting rig loaded with 15lb braid and 20lb fluoro leaders with various jig heads and plastics. Anything I definitely should or shouldn't be looking at for this trip?

Pretty sure a Cocodrie redfish will hit a rubber dog poo.
Leader is a waste of time, you’ll figure that out quickly.

1/8 oz screw lock head with any manner of dark plastic will work.

I use at least 20 lb mono tied directly to the lure. Gold Johnson spoons, mirrolures, and soft tail jigs will all work. If you have a guide go with what is recommended. I can’t wait to see the pictures. popcorn

The other way to go is a popping cork with a live shrimp. Or a live mullet or shrimp on the bottom. grin

Up until sunrise, mabe a little after, or as the sun goes down on the water, try top water lures. Its a blast having a big trout or red slam tw. Basically any lure that will catch bass will catch reds n trout. Issue, if it matters is mostly the salt gets to the hooks. Do some experimenting, its cool when you throw some strange thing out there and get slammed smile

I like Suffix 832 braid. 30# on bait caster and 20# on 2500 spinning reel. Leader doesn’t make much difference. You can direct tie to the lure with palomar knot or go with 25# mono leader won’t a double uni. FG knot is the best but way more difficult to tie.

6’6” rod for wading. 7ft rod for fishing out of the boat.

Great area to fish. We alway want the 17 to 20” reds. Better eating than the larger.
