Winning angler Barron Adams has his tournament weight disqualified for failing to produce a valid fishing license for the tournament waters. TEXARKANA, TX (Apr 23, 2022) — The National Professional Fishing League (NPFL) announces that Wright Patman winning angler Barron Adams has had his weight over three days deemed ineligible for the tournament due to failure to produce a valid fishing license for the State of Texas.
“During the post tournament verification process, it was discovered that Barron Adams had competed in the event without valid fishing license,” said Brad Fuller of the NPFL. “In reference to NPFL Official Rules section 3 (referenced below), this resulted in his disqualification for the event.”
3. PAYBACK & PARTICIPATION – Payback is based on the full field of up to 130 anglers. Participation is open only to members of THE NATIONAL PFL. Any person’s participation in any tournament is at the sole discretion of THE NATIONAL PFL officials. All pros must have a valid fishing license for the waters they fish. Failure to provide proof of a valid fishing license within a reasonable amount of time when requested by the tournament director will result in disqualification for that day and any preceding days in which the license was required for the tournament.
“The League is confident that this was an inadvertent and unintentional rules violation on Barron’s behalf, and this is in no way a reflection of his integrity as an angler,” added Fuller. “Barron is a great person and a phenomenal angler, and we are proud to have him as a competitor in the National Professional Fishing League.” TNPFL Link$100k mistake. Ouch

One would think, this would be the first item to check when driving to a new lake.

When I go fishing with a guide they often ask to see my Fishing License or digital proof, such as an email confirmation TPDW sends you when you purchase online, PRIOR to me fishing a lick.
This NPFFLP or whatever organization does not require anglers to show proof prior? Their plan is to ask them on a polygraph after the tournament? Not real smart.
Simple easy thing to do that would prevent these types of "mistakes" being made. If the anglers knew they would be required to show proof prior I guarantee not a one would show up having had made an "oversight" and "forgetting" to hit that pay button online.. They would have paper license or digital proof in hand.
They should issue the guy a ticket as well for fishing without a license. I am sure many of you will think thats overkill since it already cost him 100k, but the law is the law. Pro anglers should be held to the highest of standards when it comes to following the rules in the outdoors. If folks see that a 'pro" can fish without a license then why should the guy who fishes twice a year bother?
Have to set an example of high integrity. If we dont self police ourselves and members of our outdoor community our resources will disappear. We know Wardens are spread thin as hell. We have to do the right things even when not being watched and knowing we wont get caught.
Write this joker a ticket.

That's going to sting and haunt him for days. 100k would make me sick for more than days... I feel for the guy. I do. However its his own fault for not being sure he had a license. Would help if the League checked to be sure the Anglers were all legal before being allowed to fish but end of the day its on the individual.

Being that he is from Georgia I wonder if he bought a license in in 2023 prior to when they expire in August?

NPFL fumbles the ball again…… Bass and MLF would have swept it under the rug I bet. Surprised NPFL decided to take it on the chin and open themselves up to all the very legit criticism.
I’ll solve the problem
Verify insurance of every angler at start of year to make sure their policy is within the leagues rules with only 75 anglers and email this is simple.
Verify license at the pre tournament meeting, that way if there is an issue it can be corrected and it reminds everyone to get the license.
At the end of the day the angler is solely responsible, but man you would think if your gonna poly graph the winner and check the license that it would be much easier to check that box before the first tournament cast is made. Saves a lot of embarrassment for everyone associated with the league. The best angler did not win this event and that’s sad.

The idea that it’s the tournament orgs job to check license is silly. What next they checking fire extinguishers pre tournament? Maybe check their batteries while they’re at it?

The announcement quoted him of saying that he had done it online but did not complete the transaction, I mean you get a confirmation email within minutes plus they even have the app now that shows what license you have. Definitely stinks

The idea that it’s the tournament orgs job to check license is silly. What next they checking fire extinguishers pre tournament? Maybe tear their batteries while they’re at it? You make a very interesting and valid point. Are we going to start DQing people for expired registration and fire extinguishers on their boat. I just am not sure I have ever seen a trophy presented, for the angler to later be DQ’d. I hate it for the NPFL, it stinks for the guy that won, the guy that now won, and the organization.
