The biologists that reccommended the slot initially now say it is not working. They have made the reccomendation to remove it. Are they wrong?

Good question

I know the initial goal in stockings and limits was to obtain a certain percentage of pure florida bass by a certain time frame and they werent meeting that goal so the stockings pretty much stopped. Now it is apples and oranges when people compare this lake to Fork (forage, climate, rainfall, fertility, numbers of sandbass, small watershed and it was built to fluctuate)it would never be able to produce fish like Fork, but it does make you wonder if they abandoned the project too soon. I mean for the last 14 years Fork has received an average of over 500,000 fingerlings a year, Roberts has received 14,000 fingerlings in the last 8 years hell Lewisville has over a million in the last 3 years. It makes you wonder if it is right or wrong to remove the slot if they are not going to pick up on the stockings. It will be interesting to hear the reasoning and when stockings will increase.

Certain lakes are stocked more or less because of angling pressure. The lakes that recieve the higher attendance recieve more stocking. Rayburn, Fork and Toledo make a strong case for this.

Tournament mortality is minimal when compared to the over all population of the fishery. In most cases about 3%.

You could make a strong case that some fish need to be removed from the fishery. Some would further argue that catch and release is the demise of tournament bass fishing.

I say remove the slot.. I feel stocking will increase in the future if you remove the slot; thus increasing angling attendance.

This will really put Roberts on the map.

Where'd you come up with the 3% mortality figure? You need to look at the TPWD mortality data from a tournament on Fork a few years ago. Just because they're not upside down doesn't mean they live. Delayed mortality takes the biggest number. Elite on Falcon says it all.

i wish they would focus on getting vegetation back in the lake. Is this ahard @ expensive thing to do? I think they may shck up some bigger fish if there were grass like fork. The shocking tool only goes so deep. I think 10 ft. Not for sure. I am not an expert. I just know that i like the size of the fish i catch, It's an awsome fishery. And, if it aint broke don't fix it.

Thats not even a fair comparison, they had 30-45# in EACH livewell! No bass boat is rigged to handle 60-80# of fish.

How did Roberts fish before they put the slot limit on it in 1998?

I didn't start fishing there until 2000. When were boats with motors first allowed on the lake '89 or '90?????

Once all the tourneys kick into gear, I bet there will be more grass. You'd be surprised how much grass will be accidentally transported from Fork or other lakes with grass or even from one area of the lake to another. It won't hurt the grass, that's for sure.

Reading back through some of those old threads regarding Roberts tgen reading the newer ones it tends to point to that if fishing was not great back then and still not great today that the issue might be the lake itself and not tournament pressure, slot limits or other factors.
