We were out kayak fishing for bass and kept seeing these big fish. When we finally saw one up close I did not know what they were. Carp according to my buddy but were a different kind that I am used to seeing . They are torpedo shaped and silver and were eating along the surface and had a bigger mouth than the regular carp. I tried plastic worms and a topwater but they ignored them. Even tied on a crappie jig to no avail.

I was thinking just putting on a small hook and putting bread on there and let it float in front of them. Some of these dudes were at least 30" long and probably 15 maybe 20 lbs or bigger. I want to catch one. I am gonna go out this eve with my bass rods and one spinning rod and reel I use for redfish on the coast. That ought to be enough.

What do ya think? Good plan. I am no species snob. These are bog fish and I want the pleasure of catching one.

You are probably seeing grass carp, but there are some other possibilities. The carp and buffalo are starting to spawn and are highly visible right now. You will see them slashing, hitting under docks, and running the bank. It can be hard to catch them when they are concentrating on spawning. If they are in an area where people are feeding them, then bread or french fries will work. A hair rig is the classic way to catch them. Lots of videos out there on that. Chumming is very effective for carp. Throw out a few handfuls of range cubes and you should be able to chum them in. I use the range cubes as bait and caught 3 carp this evening.

Thank you. Gonna try bread and a tiny circle hook.

I will chum too. Great idea. If there are 3-4 and I start chumming maybe there will be more and I can choose the biggest. They were not shy when my lure splashed 3 feet in front of them so prob not bread.

I know carp, see them all the time when bass fishing and around the boat slip, They come up and eat old hotdog buns and such. They are a drag goldish brown, these are silver. I know grass carp. just did not think of them. I believe that is what they are. Heading out in a few minutes. Gonna try from the shore. Don't feel like getting on the water as I have to be up at 5 am tomorrow and if I do I will stay until well after dark.

Thanks again, will post a pic for a positive ID if I catch any. This is the first I have seen them so hope they are there.

Not a bite. Wind had changed and did not see any of the silver ones. The brownish ones were there but ignored my bread.

Chum the area with range cubes for 3 days or more then try this.

Here's a video I put together showing some different methods for catching carp.
Chumming the area with corn and range cubes like Osbornfishing recommends also helps. Toss some out for a few days and the carp will learn that there is a steady food source there and continue to stay in the area

Thanks fellas. Went bass fishing last night and saw some big ones. Those silver ones are gone.

In a week or two the carp will be thrashing around in the shallows spawning I reckon. When bass fishing I just leave when I see that. Will they eat when shallow spawning like that? I could take another rod and cast in front of them. They are easy to see.
