Do you have to buy the one in the link above to work the best or can you use an ethernet cable and the units still connect and link data points?

Or, is it worth just spending the money since its already waterproofed etc? I dont want to ruin units with water to save 30 bucks....

You can use a regular either cable but like you stated it will not be waterproof. I guess it really depends on if you store your boat inside or outside. I would likely just spend the extra money for peace of mind.
