I have been reading this thread and found it interesting. If there is a safety device that would possibly help save you from death or major injuries, that is fine. I just started thinking about how one is worried about leaving their family to deal with their loss or just ones own self protection, they are wanting to add a safety belt so that they can go out on a lake in adverse conditions, drive 60,70 or 80 mph in an open air cockpit with no seat belts or other body restraints and no brakes. Maybe it's just my off beat sense of humor.

I will call out some weaknesses I see in the design of The Leash and how it may or may not have performed from this particular accident.
The main tether of the leash attached to the engine mounting top holes and through the swivel pin of the motor. The piggyback tether that goes around the back end of the motor has hooks that attach it to the main tether.
If you go to The Leash installation video it shows this.
This boat had one side still there were the bracket and bolt attached The Leash to the motor mount. On the starboard side however that part of the motor mount was gone, broken down below and you can see in the pic where there is a clean unpainted area.

So one part of The Leash would be attached to the motor bracket and the other broken off piece would be drawn up to the swivel pin as the motor started moving up and away. What you would be left with is one bolt holding the motor from going forward, halving the stopping power The Leash would have if both bolts were still holding the motor from moving.
I do not understand why they do not have an anchor that attaches to the transom since even the set back plate has been known to fail. If that happened The Leash would not have done anything.

I would get The Leash but alter it to do more than what it looks like it does now.

Posted this somewhere, but I don't know if it was here. Precision Sonar makes a "Max Bracket" that attaches to four engine mounting bolts-not just the top two. Extra hundred bucks basically but I deemed necessary. That is what I ordered and have already received this week.

Just because we're sceptical of this doesn't make us any less caring than the next guy... Do you drive a Volvo???... They consistently get the highest safety rating of any vehicles on the road so I assume you're always traveling to and from the lake in a Volvo... Right???... At least the gov't has tested seatbelts and air bags... This, we get to take a websites word it's gonna work... Dan

We're talking about putting an exponential amount of extra stress on two bolts and expecting them to function in a way they were never designed to?
But don't question the internet keyboard safety engineers or you're just bitching. It doesn't need to be tested they said it works! noidea
Prayers up to the guys involved and their families!
I hope the leash works as advertised for those who ordered one!

actually it adds a thick bracket to the plate and changes the motor from four bolts to six bolts holding it on but why do you care if someone wants to put this on there boat i could careless it doesn't effect me one bit i say more power to them and one thing that is for sure it aint going to hurt anything putting it on
