So looking at how the leash mounts and seeing how the leash connects to the motor mount it looks like the leash would not have stopped the motor flipping up because the motor mount where its attached is broke free... I'm I wrong?

I see that the bolt is still in place but I'm not sure the bracket would still be holding. It could help sling the motor to the side in this case...

both top bolts still have a nut--so yes if the leash did its job and was installed per instructions

The leash would have prevented this. If you look at the leash installation video, you’d see that the bolts that hold the leash are still in their positions. The motor broke from the trim swivel point. That is the weak link. The jack plate is still firmly attached. I think the leash also only needs to stop the motor from kicking up far enough to prevent the trim from twisting in half. If it slows the engines inertia, then the trim swivel would have been strong enough. The leash doesn’t have to stop the motor entirely on its own. It’s adds additional strength to prevent a part from breaking as easily.

It looks like the weak link is the tilt brackets. I assume it is cast aluminum . IDK
I have seen the lower units sheared off back in the day.

Y’all are way overthinking it. +1 Every one of these I've ever seen the best I can remember the clamp broke right at the pivot point or the jackplate came apart. Those would be the weak links in the whole mount. I think this is a good concept but to me the anchor point should be the trailer tie downs on the transom. Those still may not stay put in a hard impact but they'd probably take away enough inertia to keep the motor from reaching passengers.

I'm I wrong? I was wondering the same thing. Not wrong at all. That starboard side mount is tore completely off. The leash attaches to the BOLT The bolt is still intact . You can see the bolt washer and the nut still protruding through the jack plate
