My mom would always use them to get kitchen gadgets and dish ware

My Mom collected them as well I would help her paste them in the book, when she had enough then we would go shopping at the store. I had my eye on a Kitchen playset, I think I ended up getting that for Christmas that year!!

My wife and I were basically broke when first married in 1981. Tomorrow is 42 years.

We acquired several things for the home back then with Green Stamps.

You could get any number of things when you redeem them. You could get a TV, tools, mixer, iron, pots, pans, swing set, wagon, bike, etc. Usually the stuff was good quality unlike what they would hand out today. It was one of the early reward programs. You would get the stamps for purchases made at the grocery store, gas stations and other retailers. Good times!

Somewhere in all my junk, I have 2 or 3 books of S&H Green stamps that were never cashed in.

I remember them well. My first job at 15 years old was at a TEXACO Gas Station and we gave out Green Stamps.

My granny showed me the damp sponge method which was clutch! I live in the house I grew up in and it is no more than five miles from where the S&H store was located here in Fort Worth. I can remember two things we got from the store as if it was yesterday. First, my sister and I did not share well with each other at the time so we saved up for two chemistry sets, one for each of us. No way in heck they could sell that dangerous box of chemicals today and many a household item was rendered useless or destroyed all together and it is a miracle that neither my sister nor myself was seriously injured or worse. Second, we had become better at sharing by the time we saved up enough to bet a crochet set. It was really nice and we played with it for years. I know my mom got other things but those are the ones that stand out in my mind.

Thanks for the memories..

In the olden days pilots of business type aircraft would know which fuel dealers gave Green Stamps! Some of the early corporate aircraft with round engines needed lots of Avgas-and oil I might add. So the pilots would load up on fuel at these operations and take the “loot” home to Mama! It made the fuel business pretty wild during those years! I speak from experience! Also I seem to remember “Frontier” stamps although I dont believe they were around as long. My first Zebco rig came from a redemption center in San Angelo but not sure which one!
