A diesel in a 3/4 ton, 1 ton, etc, makes sense and would be necessary for work, hauling and towing. The small diesels they are putting in 1/2 tons are lame. I drive a half ton Ram Limited 4x4 Eco Diesel with the Ram Box storage. It's the best truck I have ever been in, and safe to say I have driven far more trucks than most! LOL. Would I pull anything heavy with it? No I wouldn't. The fuel mileage I get outweighs the cost of diesel all day long, and I LOVE the Ram Box Storage.

It's gas all the way unless you are pulling over 11,000 pounds, yes the diesel's engines last forever but everything else falls apart and Diesels are higher cost wise, higher gas and higher to maintain.

Here's a story.
Freightliner with a kitty cat. CAT diesel. Automatic. Bull hauling.
I was sent to an auction barn. Loaded maybe 20,000 pounds. Next stop, loaded more. All average, 500 pound steers.
Max weight allowed by law for the entire truck is 80,000. Which comes out to about 40,000 pounds in the trailer.
With both pick ups. There was 43,000 in the trailer. The fuel tanks on the truck were full and the total weight was way past 80k. You could the air bags and drive wheels creak.
I dragged those cattle over 300 miles, driving 75. (Cattle trucks are governed different).
Long story short. If you ever wonder why certain back roads look crushed. Bull haulers. We would drive an extra 50 miles out the way to avoid the scales.

Another factor that favors the diesel from what I can see is resale value. Gas trucks lose more value per year than a diesel.

Jpurdue is right. I have had numerous people at gas stations actually offer me 15K plus for my 5.9 Dodge...:) I always smile and say pass...I could sell it but whatever I got off of it might make a down payment on a used truck I know nothing about.

You guys with a standard transmission...
Have you ever stuck it in the highest gear. Gently off the clutch and let that diesel slowly chug up to speed?
Chug-a-lug-lug-chug. 7.3 will do it. Lol, it's kinda fun.
That's a big reason why they're used to tow.

In my experience diesels also cost more to maintain. Like a lot more.

That's because of the emissions devices added on.
The older, bare diesels with a mechanical injection pump. No nothing else. Runaway special....
Will run forever. The only maintenance it needs is called an, 'Overhead'. The cylinder head is rebuilt. Valves and such. Which usually occurs past 200,000+ miles.

That's a big reason why they're used to tow. The 7.3 was good for its day but in reality to newer trucks it’s a turd. Late model 1/2 tons have as much torque and towing rating.

Navastar, built by International. Then Ford started making their own in house. Some of them are junk. Observe the prices on a 7.3 in a 4x4. The 7.3 has a serious fan base.

I bought one last year, drove it home from Odessa and sold that POS within 6 months. Zero balls compared to my 6.7 Powerstroke
