If you tow much, diesel is the obvious choice. If you don't tow but just want something that's got a lot of power and don't mind the expenses, diesel is still the right choice. Modern gas trucks have gone way beyond the capability of the older gassers and are great options too if you don't tow much. I'm not a Ford guy, but the 5.0 V8 is the ticket if you need decent capability, and the 2.7 EB gets fantastic mpg. Ram 3.6 V6 gets great mpg and lasts forever as well. Both Ram and Ford have excellent transmissions behind them. Modern diesel transmissions are fantastic also with the exception of Cummins/68RFE. My 2020 F-250 with the powerstroke and 10-speed is smooth and stupidly powerful.

I will say this - my opinion would be to go diesel on a 3/4 ton or 1 ton and go gas on a half ton. Gasser HD trucks just aren't very exciting. If you're gonna have expensive tires, rough ride, expensive truck, etc., then you might as well have the power to go with it. On the half ton side, I have a had ton diesel and loved it, but that was back when gas and diesel cost about the same. The only risk with half ton diesels is expensive out-of-warranty repairs to modern emissions. You just don't have that with gassers and it seems like an unnecessary risk. But all the half ton diesels have proven to be pretty good trucks, so lots of good options out there.

A diesel in a 3/4 ton, 1 ton, etc, makes sense and would be necessary for work, hauling and towing. The small diesels they are putting in 1/2 tons are lame.

Used to I said only get a diesel if you regularly tow. However, my dad bought a half-ton chevy with the 3.0L duramax in it and I now am a believer in the mini-diesels for everyday use by people who don't tow. The best mileage he has got was around 34. He regularly gets 30-32mpg highway. 24 or so city. We went on a fishing trip last week and dragging his center console he got 17mpg.

Had a diesel since 2008 - except for 3 years when I went back to gas from 2015-18 - back to diesel last year. Better gas mileage and engine seems to go better, longer, but diesel has been more expensive since 2008ish.

I faced this decision back in 2020. I wanted an crew/ super cab with an 8ft bed so that automatically puts you in the 3/4 ton category. Did an internet search and there were 6 within 200 miles of me. Two were basic work trucks (so they were out), 1 diesel and 3 gassers. One of the trucks was a new 7.2 gas and I didn't wanna be a Guinea Pig on a new engine. The last 3 were a GMC, Ram diesel and a Ford... I went with the Ford because it had everything I wanted as far as options and the dealer was on the way to the lake so if I needed service it was more convenient. For work I drove Ram and GMC 2500's for 20 years, both diesels and gassers. I never had a bit of trouble with any one them so when I was looking diesel was not a deterrent. With fuel prices the way they are I think I made the right decision... Dan
