Oil change cost on my 3.0 should be about the same as 5.3 or 6.2. The diesel takes 7 quarts, the 5.3/6.2 take 8. The 3.0 sips DEF as well. I'm told it should be rough 10-15 bucks per 5000 miles, so a rounding error really.

I used to be diesel guy and had both at the same time, one ton Ram 3500 and 3/4 ton Ram gas truck. Sold the diesel. My 2016 6.4 hemi pulls my heavy arse 50 HP Mahimdra tractor with all my implements on the trailer. Box blade, grapple, straight blade and 6 ft shredder. I’d guess a little over 10k pounds and my gas truck pulls it like it’s got good sense. Same for my 37 ft bumper pull travels trailer, does just fine.

If I drove more miles than I currently do, I would have a diesel truck. But my total annual mileage is perhaps 10K, so the gas engine made more sense when I got it.

Now if I find myself hauling this big boat all over the state more often and running up the mileage, then I might consider trading in on a diesel truck.

Diesels have their place and uses, I'm in the cattle business and I own four of them. The wife drives a gasser, her fuel bill is high as kite but she goes back and forth to town multiple times a day and her Waggoneer gets like 17 mpg.

I drive a company sled now, so I run the wheels off and get a new one.

When I bought my own I ran diesel for the life. I put a half million miles on my 01 7.3 and it was still running strong, no gas burner can match that.

Check the price of spark plugs and how much money it is to switch them out. The plugs in my 6.2 L99 run about $15 each. Last time a plug shorted out. Only it got replaced. $15 x 8 cylinders is no joke. Let's not get into the crazy expensive coil packs or the plug wires, either.


Diesel? Change the fuel filter and maybe, if maybe. A glow plug.

2019 Tundra. I tow a boat on weekends and currently go to the office twice a month. Office is 20 minutes away.

I have no need for a diesel truck.

Remember the good ole days when diesel averaged $.10 less than gas?
That was my main reason for buying my Cummins. That and it got better mpg than any 8 cylinder truck.

I got a new diesel last February but I tow a lot and drive a lot. If I didn't tow so much and go so far towing, probably would be ok with a gasser. I bought brand new because I needed a truck like right then. No more waiting, I tried waiting as long as possible. I actually got a lower monthly payment buying brand new than barely used. So brand new it was. Now these new diesels aren't flawless. The def is a PIA, I had a sensor go bad at 6k mi and when I ran the OBD and looked it up, was a 10 min fix.... problem though, the sensor was $1100. So back to the dealership to get that fixed. I cannot wait for there to be a delete out for these 22 models. It might be a good while but I wont delete for another couple years anyways, but the exhaust def system is a joke. Also, the new ram trucks are not a fun ride at all. Will be putting in new shocks all the way around and changing out to thuren coil springs in the front and new a track bar to ease up the ride a little. I worry about the transmission and I am sure it will pop at some point. Seems all cummins owners do a transmission at some point. But I am not racing it around or towing hard with it, so maybe not but either way, as mentioned above, transmissions have always been a weak point in diesels.

Otherwise, not quite to a year of ownership and 22k miles on it so far and it has been great. Hope it keeps staying great because I am hoping if I take good care of this one, I can get 200k mi out of it or more.
