I just bought a GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 with the Duramax 3.0. It was my first diesel. If I'm being honest I'm pretty nervous about whether it was the right choice. 5.3 V8s were super tough to find with a model I liked. A lot of trucks out there right now have the 6.2's in them, but there is the huge debate as to whether they require premium gas. I got a different answer every where I looked.
I had a 5.3 Silverado 1500. That truck got 15 in the city, 21-22 on the highway, and 11 pulling my boat. This new 3.0 duramax is getting 21 in the city, 27-28 on the highway, and 14 and change pulling my boat.
Diesel prices are about 25% higher, but the MPG I'm getting is also about 25% higher. Obviously, maintenance and up keep is higher on the diesel, but at this point I'm planning to trade in every 2 or 3 years so I should avoid the bulk of that. Anyway, the jury is still out for me I guess, so far I'm loving the new truck though and the better MPG. I've got a 15 Chevy with a 6.2 and 130K. I've towed an average of around 9k around half of those miles. Not once has my vehicle ever seen 93 octane.

My 6.2 is in a Camaro. I've modified it. Turned the full mix up. More rich. Other things done. Ported intake, headers etc.
I use to run high octane. Then tuned it down for 91 and run 87.
87 will do anything you want. Higher octane isn't needed unless you're really getting after it. Otherwise, no difference.

Not sure what I like better, I keep going back and forth between 1/2 and 3/4 tons. Last 5 have been a F150 King Ranch, F250 Platinum, F150 Raptor, F250 Lariat, and now a GMC AT4X. Digging this GMC as the newness hasn't wore off yet. In 2 or 3 years I'll probably try another 3/4 ton but a gasser this time.

I'm not hauling round bales, farm equipment, or cattle, so I don't need a diesel, especially a late model diesel with DEF, DPF, and dealing with a CEL every six months.

Had a 16' Duramax and got 11 towing our travel trailer. Went to a 22 Ford 7.3 gas and get 9 pulling the same trailer. Gas is about 1.50/gal cheaper, so it works out in my favor.

Duramax is an Isuzu engine. GM owns Isuzu. It's a division.
That diesel is Jap-o-nese.

I tow my boat just about weekly...I still chose F150 3.5L Ecobeast (gas). Didn't see the need for the added expenses. There are very few times where I wish I had a diesel.

I have 3 trucks with the Duramax, one is for the ranch and hunting, one is for work and running around, the other is my garage queen, gets to pull the boat around several times a year. Been driving diesel trucks since 2002, I think that is when the Duramax came out.

I voted for a gasser, but I am currently driving my 2003 Dodge 2500 5.9 Cummins 4x4. I have 164000 miles on it and been driving it almost 20 years. My next one will be a gasoline truck since I do not need a diesel any longer. It`s still a great truck and I make keep it 25 years since I don`t put that many miles on it any longer since I retired 2 years ago. It`s hard to not drive my wife's Honda Accord that gets 38 mpg every day of the week. I only put 1400 miles on it since bow season started and I might put 1000 on it till it starts again.
