I can still see my dad and uncle on Toledo back in the 70's with the old pistol grip Lew's. Now we have the long handles that bruise the ribs. LOL

That's how I was taught to do it. Of course that was with a 5'6" fiberglass rod and 14# mono (if I was lucky) and a dull 5/0 straight shank hook.

Mine is more a 3/4 hook set. At the first tick, thump, or anything that doesn't feel normal I'm crossing their eyes, not "waiting to see if they have it".

I remember reading an article in Texas Hunting & Fishing News about how Lake Fork Guide Cheryl Davenport didn’t even set the hook.

I do, my BIL who lives in Massachusetts calls it the Texas Hook Set.

My 76 year old Dad the whole time we were in Mexico a couple of years ago. Makes me laugh still thinking about it. Of course he laughed when I set a small fish so hard it cam flying out of the water at me...
