What I wouldn't give for a few dozen live waterdogs

Didn’t they use to be plentiful around Fork years ago? What happened?

My source dried up. I guess water dog farming is not a lucrative business up north. My partner would run a truck to N. & S. Dakota several times beginning in November. Kountry Korner at Monty was my biggest (by far) customer for waterdogs. I would sell them 25,000 between Dec & Feb every year for 5 yrs.

When I worked in the oilfield in ND, they where all over the roads. Can't remember what time of the year but you could fill a cooler just from the one's crossing the roads.

thumb

Water dogs are water dwelling creatures in that stage of their life. If they were crawling across the road chances are they had already transformed into a Tiger Salamander. As the water warms thats what happens to them. They are no longer good for bait at that point. They put off scent that is repulsive to bass once they transform.

I knew this guy about 25 years ago that I would see all the time at one of the local lakes. His parents had a house in Burch creek and he would always talk about fishing water dogs at Fork. So one day he shows up with about a dozen of them and I’m like WTF are those. I caught a few decent bass pitching them around the reeds but the fish down here didn’t really seem to care for them. I had no idea you had to travel that far to get them.
