Wow, I used range cubes to chum all the time, I've heard of using them as bait, but I've never seen a bass eat them. Pretty cool. When you are using the cubes as bait are you chumming with corn as well? I do not chum with corn. I just chum with cubes. Once the fish get used to eating the chum they will eagerly go after the cubes as bait. I caught 5 carp this evening on cubes.

For those who fish with range cubes, do you wait a certain amount of time , or do you start fishing right away ?

MO I start fishing right away. If I don’t get any bites, then I throw out a couple of handfuls of cubes. After I fish, I throw out a couple of pounds then fish the area the next day.

Marcus, I like your idea. I may give that a shot. Sounds quick and easy.

I started by using bands on the cubes and it will work. I found the rig would not last as long as the drilled cube method since the band would break the cubes once the cubes started to dissolve. It is always good to have different methods available for different situations.

I have tested the dissolve rate of range cubes under a variety of conditions. Unfortunately, ever bag of cubes dissolves at a different rate. I have had cubes dissolve immediately when they hit the water, and cubes that took over an hour to dissolve. Current, water temperature, species present (like sunfish, shad and small catfish) will all effect how long the cubes will last. I found that using a band reduced the viable time of the cubes on the hook, and resulted in a lower hook-up rate, when fished side by side with the drilled method; but the bands will work and they are definitely faster to rig. I would be interested to see if you have similar results. I have also used string to tie.on cubes, tape, water soluble bags, and even glue. All will work if the fish are actively feeding.

i baited a area with cubes yesterday i had them rolling on the surface they were loaded in, i caught a good amount with the bands but i did seem to miss alot more than normal first time to try it in winter they seemed to just nip it in one spot and not run with it, i had to fish weightless and watch my line move, and if they even detected and resistance from me checking they would let it go i literally had to watch my line move then set on them. i use the atwoods store brand cubes they stay together in water well.

You may have been dealing with buffalo. They are often light biters. Big shad will also nip at the baits.

I foul-hooked a shad on a range cube rig a couple summers ago. Those are weird fish. I think they had been picking my bait up and running with it a little ways, very annoying.
The range cubes produced at the feed mill near Austin only last twenty minutes in the water. Producer’s Pride brand from Tractor Supply only lasts seven minutes. The Purina brand seems to go about forty? If I was more organized I would have the fast dissolving for chum, and the Purina for bait.
The CatchingDinosaurs guys use bait floss to afix the range cube to octopus hooks. I'll probably use that in conjunction with drilling next time.
