I am considering purchasing a new drop shot rod. I understand the NRX is widely considered the gold standard. Besides the NRX, what rod and action would you recommend or what rod and action would be on your wish list for a dedicated drop shot?
Thanks Michael

Has anyone used any of these 3? MegaBass whip stick, Shimano Expride, or the Dobyn's Champion Extreme?
How do they compare?

I use the Dobyns DX 702 paired with a Shimano Stradic 2500 and like it better than others I have tried including the NRX 722 DSR. To each their own.

Just like all other techniques, there are subdivisions of rod depending on whether you are fishing the DS texas rigged or nose hooked. If you do Texas rig you need a rod with a little more backbone than a nose hook rod. Nose hook hook sets are pretty much done with the reel but just as in any other texas rigged scenario, you have to set the hook with the rod. I've been using a Skeet Reese DS rod for at least 10 years and have caught a lot of fish with it. Its a 7'2 medium light with a very sensitive tip. I texas rig and nose hook with it and haven't had any problem with hook sets with either technique. I use a Revo STX 4000 spinning reel. Its been a really good combo.

Dobyns DX 702,,,great drop shot rod.
I like to use a baitcaster rod and reel better than spinning tackle for drop shotting.
I use spinning tackle for crappie fishing,,,which I hardly ever do any more.

Spinning or baitcasting? Lots of choices for spinning rods. The selection for a baitcasting rod for finesse/light baits gets a lot smaller. Limber, sensitive and still the backbone to land a large bass. I just sold on the TFF a Dobyns Champion Extreme 742 paired with a Diawa Pixy baitcasting reel that checked all the boxes. Finesse fishing just wasn’t my thing. Although the 742 says “medium/fast” it’s really “light”. I have quite a few of Dobyns rods and several of the Champion 734’s that I use for just about everything but Dobyns lists that rod as “Heavy” and it’s actually “Medium”(arguably M/H) at best. Just my opinion (and totally subjective)but Dobyns rods are all rated way heavier than their actual weights. Champion Extreme 742 = excellent drop shot baitcaster.
