Does anyone have the history on what happened to the vegetation in Joe Pool lake? I keep seeing references to areas of the lake having heavy vegetation, but I've found hardly, if any, vegetation in the lake.

Was this lake a victim of the TPWD's genius idea to kill off vegetation? I've read about various lakes in Texas that have had their vegetation killed off for various reasons.

I believe they sprayed it several years ago.

Back in the 90's when the lake first opened, there were a few guys that fished Fork on a regular basis. They would "occasionally", and accidentally bring back grass and it would grow. Imagine that? As far as what happened to it, I can only assume it died off due to drought and TPWD spraying it. In those days I fished the lake a lot as I lived 10 minutes away. I eventually moved east and focused on other lakes. The grass was there, and it was good. Then again, Fork, Hubbard, Richland Chambers, Bob Sandlin and Cypress used to have a ton of grass and now it's a long-lost memory. Water authorities and homeowners don't care about fish habitat or fishermen- they care about clean banks and easy access to their boat docks and so forth.

Pool is used essentially as a holding tank. Anytime we get floods they let Pool rise. Seems like every time grass begins to start growing it floods 6' high and stays that way for a few weeks and the grass dies off. I don't know what happened back in the 90's but that's been my experience the last few years. With the draught I'm hoping once the lake gets to full pool, we'll have some grass for awhile.

Back in the early to mid 2000's, the hydrilla was matted in several spots and the fishing was fantastic. You could catch fish all day long on the edges of the grass, and even the deep stuff that wasn't matted. I remember vividly when they sprayed. Went out to fish one morning and the water was a weird color. Knew something was up... Was gone shortly thereafter. Now it's just scattered pondweed in places that I've seen. Really sucks.

Lots of hydrilla back 10-15 years ago. The crappie loved to spawn in it. I haven't seen much since and I think the lake levels going up and down has killed it all

Are the lake levels fluctuating wildly due to drought, or due to them releasing water from the lake?

Both. If the lake gets above the conservation pool, they let it hold water and then let it out when the river systems downstream can handle the water

I had some of the best fishing of my life in that grass in the corner by the bridge with a rattle trap.... few years later they were spraying it like crazy. I went one day it was all brown and a few month later it was all gone. That quick they killed one of the best things to happen to JP lake. Same with the few grass patches infront of the state park. damn shame

Now that I think of how that marina was, I bet they did spray it. It was by the marina pretty good and they probably thought it looked ugly

JP is owned and operated by the City of Grand Prairie and its primary function is for water recreation by pleasure voters. I don't think that anything has been done for the fisherman since it was impounded. Grass would make that lake a really good fishing lake and wouldn't hurt the pleasure boaters at all. its a shame.
