You guys knew who I was referring to and I didn't even have to say his name. Of the guys mentioned above are all great fisherman and each one has contributed to the sport of bassfishing and impacted bassfishing in a very positive way helping to move the sport forward and make it mainstream, which then opened up streams of income for alot of people involved with bassfishing especially the fisherman. You guys mentioned some big names in the sport, IMHO the only one to even come close too promoting bassfishing to the world anywhere close to what Kevin Van Dam has is Bill Dance. (He was a great tournament angler, but it was his tv show that really introduced mainstream America to bassfishing, KVD took the ball and ran with it).You can go anywhere in the world and say KVD and people who know nothing about bassfishing will know exactly who you are speaking of. As far as longevity in the sport at a high level, hard to argue about Rick Clunn. He's right up there with VanDam, just not as well known outside of fishing circles. Hell, some of the guys that Clunn fishes against now were not even born yet, while he was in this game kicking butt and taking names. How old is Clunn now anyways? According to Ken Duke, who’s known as a bass fishing historian, Bill Dance is the most recognized and KVD wasn’t close. I don’t know, maybe Ken is wrong. Some examples: Facebook following: Bill Dance 1.2 million. KVD 312,000 YouTube: Bill Dance 99.9k followers. KVD 56.6k followers

Would any of those be where they are if it wasn’t for Ray Scott? Just a thought

Great point about Ray Scott creating a platform for guys to showcase their sticks on the big stage. If accurate, I can't argue with the numbers.I don't do social media other than occasionally posting here, but I find it hard to believe that KVD only has 312,000 followers on Facebook. Maybe just i n Michigan. Of course I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

The fact that old school guys were all specialist makes it tough to pick them. They had no one to teach them and rarely had an opportunity to learn about a style of fishing that took place thousands of miles from home. You always knew who would compete at certain lakes and times of year.
Much more developed anglers today because of the resources. So, the answer is a pro from recent years. But it's ultimately apples to oranges when comparing the generations.

KVD is the Michael Jordan or Muhamed Ali of bass fishing. Pretty hard to put anyone in front of him although there are many deserving to be close.

I actually had a spread sheet on this comparing Rick Clunn to Kevin VanDam. Back about 10 years ago Kevin had passed Rick on most aspects. That sheet started when Clunn’s career began with Bassmaster and he was older as Kevin started at 18. Then are other factors on the spread sheet like head to head in events. Age of Kevin and Rick definitely gives Kevin and advantage head to head.
There are other aspects one could view, like payouts, competition and more. Overall throwing out the anomalies it’s Kevin who’s the best all time today.
Today Jacob Wheeler seems poised to be the next great one, though he does not have the time yet. There are the Larry Nixons who have a lot of credits over time just not the consistency.
