Lots of TFF OTers from Texas living elsewhere. How’s that treating ya?
We are in the process of moving to western rural Michigan. I’m a 3rd generation Texan, but married a Michigan woman with a huge incredible welcoming and supportive family. And our 1 yo grandson is there. So I’m in the process of trying to get there before Christmas. Not sure I’m making the smartest decision, but that little guy up there just yanks on my heart strings.

Used to live in Brownsville, now San Diego. Probably same distance to Mexico... was young, so don't remember. Loved Mexican food at both locations.

Moved back from Montana 18 months ago. Don't take it personal but I wish I had never left. I lived in a town, pop.3900, that had two grocery stores. Pharmacy was in the grocery store. Walmart was 100 miles away. In a small town everything is close. It was perfect!!

I prefer peace. But if trouble must come let it come in my time. So that my children may live in peace

Where you come up with mulejockey? Only ask because I delt with mules much of my life coon hunting and where I come from a mule jockey is basically a horse/mule trader….

Well I must be slow cuz I’m not sure what that answer means. Either way they have some fine Tennessee walking mules from that part of the country. I’ve owned a few that I wouldn’t trade for any 1/4 horse in Texas

Yes they do. It is an art for many just like 1/4 in Texas.
What is interesting is how that coon hunting had a big part of my username and part Ky derby. My dad was always a hound trader and a few in the area I grew up took their drinking seriously and coon hunting a little less. All were job holders during day and farmers of evening. But once the tobacco got stripped that left a lot of long dark nights without tv or much of anything other than reading a book. So most men were coonhunters in late winter.
There was always someone who would bring a mule to fetch hounds when it was time to go. I had begged to go for years and even though I thought I was one of the greatest woodsmen ever, Boone/Crockett blood, etc…… I wasn’t ready for my first night coonhunting trip.

We hunted off mules cuz you can suck a fence down with a dog leash, throw a blanket over the top and jump the mule over and keep going. Not many people know that. I’ve been around ranch stock all my life but would take a good mule over a horse on a long trip ANY day.

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.

Started out hearing all the stories about mt. Lions and I researched that to a point I knew that was hogwash. At 9-10 yrs old and a bearcat pistol I wasn’t scared of a cat that hadn’t been seen in Ky for years. Then it went to ghost and goblin stories, I could only find one book at library that talked about such things in my area so that didn’t worry me.
I’m sure my dad and others were just trying to get me to work harder as back then we traded out labor in fields and barns. In particular three white guys and two black guys. Each with their own farm. Back then it was like Amish nowadays, you had something to do and the neighborhood would show up to help and bring food. They kept telling me as soon as we get tobacco to market we are going coon hunting, so I worked extra hard. Had two brothers that kept telling me that they was going to leave me out there or try and scare me, as they had already been there done that. Not me. I’ll hunt all night long.
Sure enough, time came and I found out about a new property we were gonna hunt that night. I had already been told I was mulejockey and had to ask permission and fetch the dogs. Not a problem. I found it interesting when we pulled up a good 1/2 at my guess from house and unloaded mule. They assured me that this was best way for me to learn how to gain places to hunt and no one would turn down a kid.
As I rounded last curve coming up on house with lantern I heard the dogs strike. We had parked right on a creekbank and expected it, except it wasn’t supposed to happen until I got back with permission. As I came up on porch the door flung open from the biggest black man I had ever seen. He said what about the time the dogs struck again. I have no idea what I said about coon hunting but he didn’t like it. I hit that mule and they said I would have won the Ky derby when I was coming around the bend. Sitting there drunk as heck and I had to round up the hounds before I knew guy was in on it.
Later I found out that he was a new boss of my dads and black neighbors. This probably sounds racist in 2022 but I’ve coon hunted with more black men than white men. Every single one of them called it coon hunting.
