In this age of inflation, the store is out $30 plus replacement cost on the goods.

The thief walked in the door with $0 of the store's money/goods. He walked out the door with $70 in goods and $30 in cash. We can equate that to $100 of the store's money.

What do I win?

Plus the revenue they could have made from the goods if someone used their own money to buy them. The store never made the revenue they intended to make when they brought the goods. They had the $70 that went to the goods in the first place. Basically the cost of the goods was what got $70 of their $100 back.

Just curious, are you smoking a big joint or a small one?

Back when I was in college....that statement would fall into the "word salad" category.

If you try real hard in life most can overcome the fact that they went to college. In enough time most pay the debt for which they received little in any ROI. About 15 to 20% of college degrees are really necessary.

The store lost $100 due to theft when the thief took the cash.

The subsequent transaction is irrelevant

Depends really. If thief had no money, and the only way he would have bought the $70 worth of goods is if he stole the money first it is relevant. If he was going to buy $70 worth of goods whether he stole the money or not, then it is not relevant.
