Today’s electronics instructional trip turned into tomorrow’s west Texas dove hunt dinner.
Mr. Kemp: I’m pretty good with Livescope, but I just bought a new Helix side-imaging unit from David over at Shut Up And Fish. Can you help me figure that thing out? I know you’ve been using them for awhile. I just don’t feel confident in it yet.
Me: Absolutely. As good as you are with LiveScope, you’re going to pick this new unit up pretty quickly.
Mr. Kemp: Can you also show me how to dock shoot? I’ve never seen it done in person.
Me: You know it doesn’t take a lot of convincing to go shoot docks.
Mr Kemp: I’m also not planning to keep any fish; we already have plenty. Would you like them?
Me: I knew I liked you!!
We got all the Humminbird Helix questions answered, then went and hit a few stumps and docks. 4-7ft seemed to be the magic depth, with all fish coming off the bottom. For the brush, Mr. Kemp was using a 13ft Todd Huckabee rod, paired with a Slab Syndicate jig. Our dock fish came off a Thump Chubby from Constant Pursuit Outfitters, while using a 6ft ultralight UglyStik.
I kept 7 fish for crappie flautas. That’s right, crappie flautas. Me gusta mucho!!
Thank you so much Mr. Kemp for being an awesome friend and for letting DFW Outdoors take you out this morning!
