I actually learned this from NASCAR and when my son was kart racing we did it with his racing kart. We removed the seals and washed all the grease out with some solvent and blew the bearing dry and lightly oiled them. On an 1/8 mile oval track he could shut off the motor at the start finish line an coast all the way around the track. Grease and seal provide a lot of friction. The only catch is you have to clean and oil more often. I'm a mechanic by trade and work around a lot of material unwind machines that run 24/7 and nearly 365. I can also tell you slghtly worn bearing will turn free-er than new ones, especally running them this way.

Nooo NASCAR didn't race with dry lightly oiled bearings but they'd do this to run qualifying laps. flag

I hear this often, but I have yet been able to figure out how to get the steel bearing covers off the side. I canโ€™t find anything small enough to remove the keeper.

No need to take the side covers off. I use an ultrasonic cleaner, only takes a few minutes to clean then blow them out with compressed air. One drop of oil after and good as new.
