I spent 20+ years dragging a boat and camping all over Mexico and sometime around 2009 I gave it up due to the cartel activity. I would feel entirely safe flying in and staying at the lodges but I prefer to use my own boat and equipment.. I've been to Quintana Roo 5 times this year and stayed at resorts in Mahahual and Cosumel. It's sad really because I loved fishing El Salto and Guerrero and had planned on spending several months each year down there after I retired.

I think the key is to stay the hell out of places where you can encounter trouble, bars in particular. Once we cross the border to go to my hunting lease we do not stop until we get to the ranch, we never leave the ranch unless it is time to come home, zero issues in 10 years.
