I’m sure I could look this up somewhere but I just don’t feel like it, I’m planning on building some crappie “brush piles” out of pvc in 5 gallon buckets, are these legal to put out in Sam Rayburn or is there some dumb law that says I can’t?

I think it is against the law everywhere, but every one does it anyway.

I figured it would be but there are tons of videos on it, they just never say it’s illegal.

Yea I see lots of crazy looking stuff in the lakes, I’ve been bass fishing for many years but decided to change it up a little. Fished lots of brush piles, just never sunk any.

Really the best thing to do is go to the lake, chop down a tree, and drag it with your boat to 20 FOW. Or find old dead trees/brush on the shore, and pull that out to deep water. Making structure at home, then hauling to the lake, is a pain, plus not big enough if it fits in your boat. One year in OK duck hunting, I was watching the OK Wild Life Department put out brush piles, they had the whole parking lot full of cut down trees, bulldozers loading big barges... That is what it takes for a good brush piles.

I guess it depends on your lake. I live on a lake (Cedar Creek) where we have enough guides working that they create plenty of brush piles. I tried creating some on my own (PVC, 5 gallon bucket with concrete, some rubber hoses etc...) and I've caught less than 10 fish off 3 piles planted over a 1 year period.
It's much less work to just find piles created by other people. All you have to do is identify spots that are ideal -- if you can't do this then it won't help if you plant your own piles -- and then scan those areas with side scan (much faster) or (much slower) livescope.

I'd spend a couple days just searching and marking piles. Points, coves protected from the wind are good places to look. You will be amazed how much stuff is already out there.

Most CORP lakes do not allow it. Others are more of a grey area. Spend a day finding piles at several different depths that can be fished from different wind directions.
Also, can you use Google Earth history to find timber/trees during years of drought and enter those GPS coordinates into your chartplotter.

There are more brush piles in Rayburn than you could fish in year. Best to locate them.

The BEST BP'S you can put out are large cedar or cypress trees, the bigger the better. Never lived on a COE lake but they can say NO but sometimes they will require you to get a permit "NO COST" and ask you where you plan to put them however no one follows you. The cedar trees I have put out 12-15 years ago are still producing fish as of yesterday. Just remember once that BP hits the water, it belongs to any and everyone that finds it, With the electronics of today you cannot hide a BP. Large cedar trees are easy to sink if you have not allowed them to dry for a week or longer. Take a 40 lb sack of sakquete (sp??), use large nylon staging to tie them together. If you have access to a flat bottom boat place the tree crossways across the boat to tow it any distance, TREE ARE TOUGH TO TOW BEHIND YOUR BOAT, YOU HAVE LITTLE TO NO CONTROL, ever wondered why tug boats PUSH barges, try towing a good size cedar 20' with a 10" butt. Lots of work but lots of enjoyment as the reward.

This idea was really as much out of boredom as anything, I have a place on the lake and was just looking for something to do on these hot days, also I don’t care for bass fishing when the lake is this low. So I did build 5 PVC BP’s. It would have been tricky to get them all on my boat if I put them all together before I got to my spot but I put a short piece of pipe with a coupling on it in the 5 gallon bucket and let them set up. I cut the “trunk” to length and drilled all the holes in it for the branches and a hole at the bottom thru the trunk and the coupling so I could pin the trunk to the coupling at the bucket. Cut all the branches and separated them into five different groups. All of this fit on my 20 foot bass boat with plenty room left. I just assembled them when I got to my area, dropped all of them in one spot. Guess I’ll see if it was a waste of time soon.
