No is tsn't. You are just a Shimano fan. I had a new Metanium and it did not cast as well with light baits as my $150 Daiwas. I have a Curado DC and it is not as good as the Daiwa Tatula SV TW. I know because I have about 150 reels, Daiwa, Lews, and Shimano.
I don't care about being brand specific or brand loyal, I am more concerned about the performance of the rod and the reel. That is what matters to me.
You have 150 reels, can you post a picture of that mess?

Someone above already said, best is very subjective. In my opinion, the Shimano Curado is the best balance of quality and bang for your buck. I have no doubt a Metanium, Steez, etc. is a better reel, but I'm not in the market to purchase $500 reels. Shimano's quality has tanked over the years. The Shimano days of Curado E's and the old CU's are no longer. While I did like the E series, you obviously haven’t tried any of the new Metaniums, Curado MGL, Bantams, Curado DC. The new Shimano stuff is down right amazing! No is tsn't. You are just a Shimano fan, which is fine if that is what you like. I had a new Metanium and it did not cast as well with light baits as my $150 Daiwa reels. I have a Curado DC and it is not as good as the Daiwa Tatula SV TW. as far as distance or anit backlash qualities. I know because I have about 150 reels, Daiwa, Lews, and Shimano. I don't care about being brand specific or brand loyal, I am more concerned about the performance of the rod and the reel. That is what matters to me. I used to have only Shimano's but when other brands outperformed them, I switched. The Shimano SLX seems to be a good reel for the price as well as the Shimano K series. The G series and the I series were a disaster. For someone to say Shimano’s quality has tanked is laughable. The I and G series did suck but those were years ago, and the new Curado stuff is good. Fan or not, the new stuff is good. This is just like every other boat brand or truck thread. Buy what you like and get after it! Just be glad we have choices.

The one that catches fish. To quote Pat Goff, (though not sure if he originated this quote), “It’s the Indian, not the arrow”.

Abu Garcia is hard to beat for the price. I bought a shimano curado to fish with in addition to my Garcia’s, and while they are excellent reels I cant tell tons of difference quality wise, despite the shimano costing way more.

I had some Daiwa reels that were ok but since they don't back their products with parts and SW won't even work on them anymore I sold them and got more Shimano reels....
1987 Nitro MX185/Mercury Black Max 150 (needs lots of work, put motor on nephew's boat) 1994 XSC-2200 "Jaguar" AKA Shadow 22 Magnum (restoring w/Mercury 200 XRI) 1994 Pantera II (restoring w/Mercury 200 EFI) 1999 Triton TX21/225 Mercury Optimax

Pat’s “Indian/arrrow” anology was more pointed towards bass boat performance when he demo’d Champion boats. I learned a lot from him and his advise from here and the BBC - which I don’t subscribe to anymore - on dialing in my 99 203 Champ. Tks Pat. No thread derail here. “Best baitcaster” is a fun thread. Cheers

The G series and the I series were a disaster. You could put a weightless fluke on your metanium and I will put one on my Tatula Elite, and I will out cast you every time....guarrantied. I know, I have owned both reels but no longer own the Metainum because of the lack of performance of this expensive reel. Said it before and I'll say it again. After a few months those Tatula SV TW's become loose and sloppy and I'm sure you'll call me an idiot again for saying it.

I can’t wait to read the “best rod” thread! Well on the TFF, Dobyns junk is the best, duh! I started out thinking that they were a good value (the Sierra series), but man, I’ve sure been snapping the ones I have/had. I think the XP and Champions might be better quality, but they are also in the better class of rod price range. (I’m just guessing, I only have one, they might not be great long term either) My Metanium's are mounted to them on the pic I posted on page 2. I imagine they are pretty dang nice!
