There's a good reason bay boats and flats boats don't have max power: you want to get to the fish. The fish most want to get to are at the mangroves or weeds inshore and some of the biggest are in 12" of water or less. Generally, you shoot for a boat that will float in 9" and run in 12" on the main trimmed up. Heavy high hp bow high boats never get to the good fish and have to have power poles to level just to catch the little fish away from the mangroves if they go shallow at all. If this will run in 9" (and it did): ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2022/06/full-113787-143817-c_doryb.jpeg) then a "flats" boat should certainly do the same (and will if properly powered). You would be amazed at how many can't though simply because they had to have a huge engine on the back. The salt pros call them "beginners." Don't be a beginner. I never realized fish were that fast. Well - forget what I said . . . go with max hp! LOL

Some people don't care how long it takes to get to a certain spot (85 my azz!!!!).
I equate it to people who send things through USPS instead of paying the extra to send it next day via UPS/FedEx. We all know that the USPS doesn't care how fast it gets there because they have a long list of excuses for everything for when they constantly fail.

Personality traits is a loaded question. There are many reasons I would think. Fuel economy is probably the biggest factor. I don't think the resale is near as good on an under-powered boat, so maybe an older guy getting his last boat. I personally wouldn't buy an under-powered boat because I don't think you get all the boat has to offer when it's not paired with the right engine.
The solution to any problem - work, love, money, whatever - is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be. --John Gierach

It'll be different with different category of boats... Tin, fiberglass, bass, runabout, ski, pontoon, tri-toon... Whata ya thinking about? How many hp's under the rating plate???... Dan

I have a 300 on mine because they didn’t have a 400 out when I bought my boat. Boats rated for unlimited hp open up real opportunities.

My Haynie is rated unlimited, currently has a 250 proxs (I bought the boat used, and this is the original engine). Once the 250 grenades itself, I’m gonna put a Merc 400R racing motor on it. Mainly because 250 isn’t enough for me. And because I can.
