They either get it or they don't. It's a timing and cadence thing you just have to have experience with over time. We use pool cues in thick pads with heavy braid and literally never wait to feel a fish never have

Mr Perry is being a humble fisherman, the Megabass frog does not require the hooks to be bend in any direction, their hook shank is longer than all other frog which greatly increases hook ups. I also use snag proof, and spro frogs depending on the cover and conditions. I’ve been pretty consistent over the years and I wait maybe a second, you never know which direction the fish is swimming and if you wait while the fish is coming at you you’ll miss it.

Do the squeeze test, pitch down on the frog and see how much space is left between the plastic and hook point, then you see why you need to open the bend.

I like a 6.3:1 reel, to keep my bait in the water/ cover longer and its easier to keep a little slack in the line so you can “walk the dog”, which the Megabass frog does vey well.

Something else I recommend is to try and buy frogs at a store that you can open the package up and do this. There are obvious differences in how easy they collapse not only brand to brand but in colors from sane brand. Black tends to be firmer than other colors. It heats up faster and cools down slower in some manufacuring processes so it retains heat longer and it hardens a bit more. Generally matte finishes are softer than gloss finishes.

Agreed. I rarely miss fish on a frog but I have trained myself to wait on the hookset until I feel the weight of the fish. Also agree on min of 50 braid or you will be sorry.

Lots of good advice posted above. Collapsibility does vary a lot within the same brand.

Walking and/or popping cadence and speed is a significant factor.

There are times when the bass don’t care and just annihilate the frog at all retrieval speeds; but most of the time I find that working them a little slower with wider walks will trigger the bass to attack with more commitment.

I use a Dobyns Champion 705, for popper frogs and ones I am going to walk the dog with, 65# braid with a Lews 8-1 super duty reel.
My other frog rod is a 735 Dobyns rod that I use for frogs with kicker legs, with the same reel and line set up.

I like the shorter 7ft one for walking the dog with the frog because I work the bait with the tip down and the longer one with the tip up for buzzing a frog with the kicker legs.

Thanks for all you guys advice. I am on the prostaff for Truscend and they sent me some frogs they are starting to market. Put 40lb braid Sufix 832 on my Revo S and gave it shot today across the lily pads. Lets just say I had some major fun. Missed a couple on short strikes but I trimmed the skirt legs about an inch and that minor adjustment worked.

Dont count. This is not math class. Set the hook when you feel the fish. Not before. And set it hard as you can. Do set it straight up. Maybe on bending out the hooks. Depends on your frog. If you swing and miss and the frog come back up... let it sit where it is and twitch it a time or time before grabbing your follow up bait. Yes on a follow up bait.

The hard part is WAITING until you feel the fish. I have not had a bass hit a frog and bring it back toward me. They almost always move out and to one side or the other and dive deep or into any cover nearby. They know they might lose this "frog" and want a chance to recapture it if they do.

It takes practice, and you will always miss fish on a frog. But follow my tips and you will be doing all you can do. Trust me...I am a great angler.
