My wife really enjoys going to garage sales as a non-fishing activity and I often tag along when I am not fishing. Of course I am usually looking for fishing equipment. I have found that even if there is not any fishing equipment in the sale, it never hurts to ask if there is any fishing equipment that they have not put out. Sometimes this pays off big. I picked up this stuff from an aging angler that wanted it to go to someone that would enjoy using it. It was all very dirty and took a couple of hours to sort through and clean, but since the angler would only let me pay him $30, I thought I did ok.

I used to buy old tackle boxes full of what most would see as just junk. I took them home and would go through the old tobacco cans full of hooks, leaders, etc. and handle the old beat up lures, imagining the man who used them and trying to guess what kind of a fisherman he was by the way he tied knots and his choice of equipment. I had a large collection of old beat up bamboo rod, salt water cane rods, reels, etc. None of them in any great condition, but each with a story to tell. I especially loved the old rods with the red glass eye inserts. I still have some of that in my storage shed, but now I am the old guy with the beat up stuff and my fishing is done mostly on this forum and on YouTube.

Garage sale season is coming to a close, but there are still some great deals out there. I picked up a Accurate Boss Magnum reel on a Shimano Trevala 65-200 lb jigging rod for $20. Get out there and get some deals before the garage sale season is over.

I still like hitting the garage sales every once in a while. Typically find your bass gear like the OP found. I will generally buy what I find for next to nothing, put together a whole tackle box full of gear and donate to kids wanting to learn how to fish.

I have possibly spent $50 over the years, but have donated 20 FULL tackle boxes with a rod n reel combo. Worth every penny!

I told the guy he could get $500 for the rod and reel on EBay. He said he doesn’t fish in saltwater anymore and he just wanted to get the rod and reel out of his garage. There are people out there that have so much money they just don’t care about losing value of an item as long as it is easy. I give away much of the fishing equipment I get at garage sales after spending hours repairing and cleaning the equipment, so I think buying stuff at garage sales is a great way to keep equipment in use.

Today was a little slow on fishing stuff. After taking my wife to about 75 garage sales, I only ended up with a few fishing purchases. I picked up a plastic box of several lures for $9 and over 70 flies in 2 fly boxes for $7. Time to stop garage sale shopping and start fishing.
